*OFFICIAL* March Madness Game Discussion Thread

Seem to recall that we had a chance or two to hire him way back when and hired another of our usual disappointments? Such a UT thing. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

He was considered when he was at Hofstra, not at Villanova. Wright was hired March 27, 2001 at Nova, and we hired Buzz Peterson in early April after the NIT. Jay Wright was always going to Nova if that job was open.

We picked Buzz Peterson instead. He was MJ's college roommate you know.

Jay Wright was hired at Nova a week or two before we hired Buzz. I guess you could say that we waited for the NIT to end to hire Buzz, but I don't believe Wright was ever picking us as long as that Nova job was open. That's his end job.

When we first interviewed Wright it was us or Rutgers. But we put him off to hire Buzz. Dickey hired O'Neil, Green, Wade Houston and Buzz. No man did more harm to UT basketball in its history.

DAD was bad. But KO wasn’t a bad “hire” at all. Not being able to competently manage him was Dickey’s failure with O’Neill. That was actually a big issue with Wade as well. While most coaches were working 60, 70, 80 hours per week, Wade was a part-time head coach more concerned about running his trucking business with his wife than building a program. Wade used TN to highlight Allan. Wade’s recruiting was horrible. Especially considering that is what he was known for in his role helping Louisville to win that National Championship. Allan ended up running the practices as much as Wade was.

I agree with that, and I was a student during that time. I can't say that I remember the exact details. But all I am saying is that Villanova was his end job. Wright was an assistant under Massimino and is from Philly.

Jerry Green was terminated on March 20, 2001. Steve Lappas left Nova on March 25, 2001 after his season ended March 14. Jay Wright was hired at Nova two days later on March 27 after UT had just interviewed him. So, it appears that Nova made a move quickly knowing that Wright was considering other offers. Nova was always where Wright wanted to be, so I just don't think we can assume it was on Dickey making the wrong decision.

O'Neil brought in a few good players but he's just not a good coach. He got a lot of jobs and never won anywhere after he left Marquette. He inherited a pretty good roster with some NBA talent at USC and did markedly worse than Tim Floyd with it. He only won 20 games 2 times in 16 years as a head coach.

O’Neill was an idiot to bail on TN to go to Northwestern. Northwestern is possibly the worst program from all P-5 conferences. Their last coach to finish with a winning record left in 1950.

He was known as a recruiter. His TN teams played outstanding defense (but couldn’t throw a basketball into the TN River).

I wouldn’t consider what he did at USCw. There was a ten year gap being out of college coaching. But he did manage to sweep Bruce Pearl in back-to-back years.

Haha Didn’t even read it. Don’t want to give Forde the clicks. Just having some fun

Haha, well since I already had it open, here's a taste:

"In point of fact, the old coach is doing a great job, too. Duke 78, Texas Tech 73, was Coach K’s 100th NCAA tournament win—by far the most in history—and it was some of his better work. This was strategy, preparation and passion coming together."

"This was a triumph that showcased three of Krzyzewski’s gifts: his adaptability, his player empowerment and his unparalleled recruiting."

Surprised to see this coming from Forde. I remember some of his criticism over the years, the 92 Duke vs Kentucky game in particular .

You really believe it is run like that? Haha.

You can search on ncaa.org and find any committee member, how long they have been serving/their end time on the committee, and the school/conference they represent.....Good try though in trying to say member institutions don't run it

Oh, I wasn't suggesting that it isn't run by "member institutions." But there are a lot of politics involved. Just between conferences (which are all member institutions), there are differences and jealousy involved. Just because the organization is run by "member institutions" doesn't mean all of the members benefit. It has been corrupt for years- pretty simple.

If they win tomorrow, next weekend is going to be that X1000.

He coached Arizona for a year, two years before he got to USC, when Lute Olsen quit just before the season started. They lost 15 games and finished 7th in the Pac 10. They'd finished 3rd the year before. He got a lot of jobs in college and the NBA but winning was just never something he was able to achieve.
