He coached Arizona for a year, two years before he got to USC, when Lute Olsen quit just before the season started. They lost 15 games and finished 7th in the Pac 10. They'd finished 3rd the year before. He got a lot of jobs in college and the NBA but winning was just never something he was able to achieve.
I don’t consider the brief, unexpected time as the interim/temporary head coach at Arizona for a couple of months to qualify. It was never “his” program. It was a mess - which tends to follow him. If he wasn’t a nut he could have continued on a successful trend as a college coach. Douglas A. Dickey failed him as a boss and he never recovered from that mess.
