Official Mike Gundy Thread I

I think I heard Rucker say on 104.5 that Sexton is his agent. If true I am sure he is just doing this to get a raise from OK state and Hart did it as a favor towards the Sexton family. I do not want Gundy!

Sexton is his agent.

What accomplishments?

1 BCS game and 1 Big 12 title? That makes him an A Lister?

Hes got a great record against pitiful teams, woohoo.

He has never had a top 25 recruiting class...

Tell me, what really makes him an A Lister?

So what, we constantly have top 25 classes and have been trash for a decade. Recruiting rankings don't mean squat, and yes they have had top 25 classes.

Also, I do believe they were on their 3rd string quarterback and dealt with a slew of injuries this year...So if you can't cut him some slack for that then all the excuses from last season are invalid.

You can keep up this pipe dream that UT is an "A List" school, but its not anymore. In case you didn't notice we are 2nd worst team in the SEC with probation problems. The new coach would have to deal with recruiting against a lot of high profile names and with Bama going to BCS Title games on a yearly basis, it makes things..well difficult.

If I had my preference I lean towards Strong for defense and recruiting ability.

My argument here is Gundy is not an A lister, and before you respond, Strong isnt either.

Dream list would be - Gruden, Stoops etc

So he's not an A lister because of only one conference championship and one BCS game. But Gruden who has zero in both categories is? VERY sound logic.

T. Boone Pickens' net worth: about 1.5 Billion

Charlie Ergen's net worth: about 9 billion.

I'm not measuring length.

"Pickens' gift remains the largest donation to a university's athletic program in collegiate history. His total contributions to OSU come to over $400 million. Over $265 million, or 66%, of his donations have been towards athletics."

Ergen hasn't even cracked the top 5 at UT:

Five Largest Gifts from Named Donors
James & Natalie Leach Haslam, $32.5 million, Feb. 2006
John & Alice Lupton, $25 million, Aug. 2001
Richard & Gail Siegal, $22.4 million, Dec. 2003
Dr. Min-Hwan Kao. $17.5 million, Oct. 2005
Clarence & Marian Brown Estate, $11.5 million, April 1994

Funny how every report out there about open positions rate this as the best and one of the best jobs to have in the country.

Your way of thinking would mean UT is a B rate school and should hire B rate coaches and always stay B rated.

Gundy is #1 on my realistic list.
Realistic? How so? As a resident of Stillwater for 36 years, I'd say Gundy is the longest of long shots:
1. Newly revamped Boone Pickens Stadium and a new athletic village under construction here.
2. Native Okie; player, assistant coach, and now coach at OSU
3. Has a ton of talent he can recruit in OK and especially TX - knows the high schools & their coaches, and they know him.
4. Beat both OU & Texas last year, and is thus competitive with OSU's 2 big rivals. That would not be the case at Tennessee, which hasn't been competive with Florida & Alabama for quite a while.

And that gift has turned into a curse for OSU. Google "T Boone Pickens 165 million" and read the WSJ article (tried to post the link, but it then takes you to a wall). Thanks to Picken's hedge fund, OSU has lost the majority of his gift, a Picken's scheme to use OSU money to buy life insurance policies on older alumni went belly up and left OSU holding the bag for millions, the athletic village project is an empty dirt field, and the athletic department is broke.

This mess in no ways means Gundy would leave, but it might be reason enough to make him think about leaving.

Look forward to a 5-7 for his first year season.(next year)

And then a bunch of 6-6 and 7-5 and maybe one 8-4 season.

What has Mike Gundy ever done besides be average in a weaker Big 12.

He has only had one Conference Title in 8 years of coaching at OSU.

The dude went 7-5 this year.

It is sad that we now settle for mediocrity

Les Miles approves this post.

Alum, dream job, would get a match on any offer, does not need to "prove himself" in the SEC, has a better shot in the Bevo10 to win while he's still young and relevant, loves his local charities, got a raise recently when he was flirted with by other schools, ect ect.

Yeah. Don't see it. Heart is at Okie st. Thats OK with me. Not a big fan; anyhow.

IMO Gundy has a lot of upside - mainly because HE'S A MAN!! HE'S FORTY!*

*Actually I think he's 45 now, but who's counting

He's done better than Les Miles did when he was head coach at Ok St.

As far as this year they lost a lot to the draft last season. Had several injuries this year I believe.

News flash: If Bray, C Patt, Hunter, and James all go pro, we might be looking at 5-7 or 6-6 anyway, bro.

If Grundy gets hired, IMO that will be a good hire. Offense will be high powered, if he gets rid of sal and brings in a proved DC that has control over the defense. UT will be fine.

I may be wrong, but fulmer only won two conference titles in 16 years. I get the overall point of the op though. If butch Davis does indeed get cleared from the AA, I wouldn't mind him being the next hc.

Looks like steady improvement to me. Sure they had a down year this year, but that's because he was watching Dooley all year, waiting for his job to open up. :)

Les Miles approves this post.

So you are comparing Les Miles who took over LSU when Nick Saban left for the NFL and ended the season at 9-3, with a huge talent rich state.

To Mike Gundy who if he takes over Tennessee when DD got fired and ended the season 5-7 with little talent state wide.

your smart

Well since you're so smart. Who would be a better candidate that we can realistically get?
