Official Watch Party Thread (NCAAT seeding edition)

I know they have some bad losses, but I can’t imagine a team that is 5th in the Big 10 isn’t in the NCAA.
1 of 2 things will happen…to stay 5th they’ll have to keep winning which will improve their resume and thus seeding, or they’ll drop a few and not be 5th. If at years end they’re 5th then yea they’ll be in, but with 3 weeks left that’s kinda a moot point today.

Todays games:
Illinois vs. Rutgers
Mississippi State
vs. Alabama
Seton Hall vs. UCONN
Vanderbilt vs. Auburn
Purdue vs. Northwestern
Baylor
vs. Texas Tech
Gonzaga vs. Pepperdine
Rutgers wins
Mississippi State loses
Seton Hall loses
Vanderbilt loses
Northwestern loses
Baylor loses

There is a lot of basketball left, but Rutgers is flexing some muscle again. Up 11 late in the first half on Illinois. Rutgers is legit good. Those non-conference losses are just puzzling now.
The Big 10 is overrated. Maybe those teams they are beating in conference aren’t actually as good as those ranked numbers beside their name? There’s some bad defense being played in that conference compared to the SEC.

Adjusted Defense Rankings
Purdue 117th
Illinois 23rd
Ohio St 80th
Iowa 120th
Michigan St 48th
Wisconsin 37th
Michigan 83rd
Indiana 20th
Northwestern 65th
Rutgers 42nd
Penn St 53rd
Maryland 96th
Minnesota 129th
Nebraska 151st

Kentucky 13th
Auburn 9th
Tennessee 4th
LSU 1st
Alabama 66th
Arkansas 18th
Miss St 75th
Florida 54th
A&M 63rd
Vanderbilt 50th

Wow. That is quite the contrast. It kind of speaks to just how under-values and good the top half of the SEC is. Bodes well for tournament play and I will be hammering SEC teams in March in my bracket.

It’s even more eye opening if you were to remove the two bottom feeders from each conference.

Wonder how this compares to years past, doesn’t the Big Ten usually have the SECs number? They definitely put an end to many of our runs.

Texas Tech wins. Probably better to hope Baylor implodes down the stretch now. We need a little bit of movement in front of us.
Committee considers injuries. If they struggle without JTT they could definitely move them lower because of it regardless of what they did prior to him going out. One reason it was important for Vols to step up after ORN went down

Had the same thought this morning, they’re also 6-5 over their last 11, and have a tough slate to finish the year.

Big 10 had 9 teams in the NCAAT last year and went 8-9. They were expected to go 16-9 based off seeding. All the other conferences finished close to their expected won-loss record. The only conference that far exceeded expectations was the Pac-12, which was expected to go 2-5 but went 13-5. The Big 10 is the most overrated conference and it’s not even close.

Just hope we actually beat them then

5 of our last 9 exits have been thanks to Big 10 teams, most of those in excruciating fashion

You can blame a couple of those on some controversial calls by some “look at me” refs. Those were not fouls against Turner vs Purdue and Stokes vs Michigan. The Big 10 bias is real but some out there refuse to believe it. The Elite 8 Michigan St game, we crapped the bed by missing free throws down the stretch. Same thing happened against the Greg Oden Buckeyes in which we were up 19 at the half. Got torched by Michigan the year the Bruce Pearl stuff went down. So two of those, we choked the game away, refs cost us an opportunity to win in two other games. The only game we were truly outplayed in was the Michigan 30 point beatdown whenever Pearl was about to be fired.

Props to IUPUI in getting their first win against a D1 opponent tonight and on the road. Still in a deep hole to dig out of last place in KenPom. Delaware State is a little ways in front of them but still has yet to win D1 game. Zach Kent missed half the year with them. Has had his struggles.

I heard Lunardi on a local station this morning. When asked about UT, he said he was expecting to move us up to a 3 seed. There was something about waiting for last night's UCLA game, and I wasn't sure if he was waiting for that outcome.

As we know, he said the difference in the 3/4 is playing the 1 seed.

We are better than UCLA in any single metric you could you use. Having them seeded higher than us, or Wisconsin, makes no sense.
