Official WBB NCAA tournament thread 2024

Definitely a moving screen you can't move and block a player like that. You have to be totally still. Any movement at all on a screen is a violation. Do teams get away with them all the time yes they do. As far as this call be called it was a legitimate call.

Imo, there's some Auriemma worship going on that suggests that he has built up enough "equity" for his past dominance that his teams "deserve" to get calls. It goes along with the overboard sympathy for a team missing some key players and depth while still having a loaded but thin bench of elite players.

Put the high school rankings of Iowa's players alongside that of CONN's players and let's compare talent.

It's very definitely a moving screen, with a little knee to the crotch and and elbow to the chest added for fun. No question there.

But this is done so frequently and rarely called, especially at crunch time with 5 seconds left, that I understand how their fans would be upset. It would be like if Clark's little "gather step" actually got called as a travel for once when she'd been doing it all game.

I'm dancing on UConn's grave regardless, but that was my 2 cents.

You know how in the waning seconds of a close game, everyone is screaming at the team with the lead "Don't foul!!!" ?

They don't say, "Don't worry about fouling because the refs will never call it with the game on the line." No, they understand the importance of time and situation and playing cleanly so as not to even give the possibility of a foul...or at least making it really difficult to call definitively.

That should go for the offense, too. Don't charge, don't go over the back, don't set moving screens. Edwards screwed up and made this an easy call for the refs.

Can you imagine the meltdown that would happen if Clark had a chance to win the game and they called it? We’d never hear the end of it.
Yeah but if it was this obvious people would just have to get over it. And if it hadn't been this obvious they probably wouldn't have called it at this point in the game. Its the giant slide step and knee. This is how Edwards has always played, leading with elbows, knees, hooking and slinging, etc.

Tough way to lose and I know it hurts. Kind of like an obvious double dribble not called. Great season though, and great job by Geno.

I guess we'll just have to imagine it.
Would've been the same no one ever thinks their team fouls or commits an illegal screen. If you move your feet like that should be called. If it hadn't been called and UConn scores then they will on an illegal screen not called. We all wish Refs could get more calls right, but this one is fairly obvious a moving screen. The double dribble was totally obvious with a Ref standing right there and SC got away with it. So there will be more calls that decide games and all through a game not just one that gets magnified at the end.

I thought LadyVol fans would be happy to see UConn lose....Especially on a legit offensive foul call....Seeing some Tennesse fans cape for them is a little surprising
The sad thing is so many Tennessee or otherwise saying it is not a legitimate call. It is one of the most legitimate calls I have ever seen. Not calling that would have been a travesty.

What I find harder to imagine is WBB officiating that is consistent and reliable lol. What if every moving screen got called, every time? What if every quadruple bunny hop got called every time? A whole new world!

True they probably missed more than ten calls that mattered in that game that might have changed the outcome more in either direction. WCCB basketball has always been a terribly officiated game. Still the call they made at the end there is still an obvious moving screen. it just is and so it needed to be called. All the ones they missed needed to be called as well we need better officiating in WCCB.

Yeah, I know. I’m trying to get over it. 😭 Definitely stings. At least it wasn’t another L on a last second buzzer beater, I guess. 😭

(Still wouldn’t mind seeing CC actually getting called on her push offs and extra steps though.)

I only knew the results of the WBB semifinal games after reading about it here on Vol Nation. Never watched so much as a dribble Friday night. So it's UConn vs. SCjr?

You can say that in the Men's game and in all sports competition a lot left up to the interpretation. IMO it was a moving screen, I don't think it would have been called if she had not displaced her with her elbow or arm. I really don't think Paige would have hit the shot anyway her game was not as on as she would have liked. Paige had a good attitude after the game that a lot should embrace, she earned a lot of respect from me she seems to be a top-notch person.

They have struggled with moving screen all season. But this one is SO obvious it would hard not to call it. Her feet are wide apart and she's visably leaning into the knee she's driving into the defender. This one calls itself.

Paige had some really nice sound bites as well about how she hopes media attention is spread about equitably next year. Could be read as well-deserved shade to the media’s behavior this year, as graciousness on her behalf, or both. The oversaturation of Caitlin Clark has led to some weird bedfellows for me fr.

I thought regardless of who won that game they were playing for second place. It is going to taking a tremendous effort for Iowa to beat Sc and would've been the same for UConn. Of course you still want that opportunity.
100%. I’m trying to look at the positive side that SC beat us once in a title game already. I’d rather not have that happen again. And realistically it probably would have. And might even have been worse this time around. 😬

You always want that chance, but they do look like a team that is just to talented to lose this year. We'll see anyone can lose. but I expect them to be huge favorites.

Drinking my coffee and watching UConn fan’s heads explode on X this morning is GREAT.

OMG, thank you Pat, we love you, we see you doing good work in the world.
