Lead a horse to water!!!The Head Coach at UT is an "offense guy" named Josh Heupel. If the offense is anemic, shifting the blame to the OC or WR coach is not the answer.
I recall someone asking Kevin Steele, who was DC at Alabama at the time, who ran the Alabama defense. He said, "Make no mistake. The defense at Alabama will always be run by Coach Saban no matter who is the DC at Alabama." Saban was, first and always, a defensive coach. There was no question.
Coach Josh Heupel is an offensive coach. Problems or perceived problems with the recruiting, schemes, playcalling, etc at UT all come down to Josh Heupel. Shifting the blame that Golesh was better or Pope isn't getting it done aren't going far enough.
If Josh Heupel isn't in primary control of the entire offense, the playcalling, the play design, the recruiting, etc...... we have a big problem at UT.
I don't think Heupel has "retired" to become a CEO style coach already on both offense and defense. Heupel runs the offense.
He's gotten over the hump and beat Bama and Florida. Georgia will come. He had to retool the offense to deal with the odd fronts that were put in this year to disrupt our offense. I can guarantee that the offense will be better able to handle whatever a defense may throw at it next year. The Head Coach at UT is an "offense guy" named Josh Heupel. With the way we've played on the road this season, it'd be foolish to think otherwise. If they can beat Alabama and manage to only lose to Texas by a field goal, they can give us a hell of a game. Need to fix what's preventing us from taking the next step this week vs UTEP and put it on display against the Commodores.Haven't won 10 games yet. Vandy could very well be a tossup.
I was screaming, block the punter. He pushed him but that was about it.Lead a horse to water!!!
We have too many plays where one or 2 people don't accomplish their assignments. Look at the photo of our punt return. Hands on helmet because he whiffed the block on the punter, he makes that block and that return is for a TD.
These type of things happen 5 or 6 times per game. CJH can coach all you want him to but he can't MAKE people take care of business, especially if the guys behind the player don't give us as good as shot of winning.
Replace them with recruiting but not much we can do about it midseason.View attachment 698936
I'm not suggesting Heupel is the problem but Heupel is definitely running the offense. If we have problems in scheming, playcalling, etc .... they need to be put at the feet of Josh Heupel because that's his bread and butter. He's gotten over the hump and beat Bama and Florida. A lot of QBs come in not being able to read a defense. A lot of HS coaches don't have the depth to teach that to kids. Nico will be better next year, but will the defense take a step back? We can never get all phases to work at once. If we had this defense with HH. My oh my....I'm not suggesting Heupel is the problem but Heupel is definitely running the offense. Lots of the problems we've seen are recruiting issues. We're losing one on one battles in the trenches to better athletes. We're not functioning well as a unit on the O Line because we have weak links there as far as talent goes.
To a lesser extent than the NFL but to some degree, college is losing the "coach them up" possibility. As elite guys only stay a couple of years, they'd better be good when they get here and some of our guys just aren't elite in skill, concentration, and execution.
Recruiting at the college level to REALLY win at high levels is now recruiting guys, and no knock on Nico or any other players at UT.... just reality, who are ready to step in and execute at a very high level from day 1 because they're only here and starting for 1 or 2 years. Coaches can't work miracles, can't make a purse out of a sows ear, as my Dad used to say.
Many of us assumed Nico would come in with a Dwayne Haskins amazing freshman stats but that's not happening so here we are thinking: he'll be great in his last year, next year.
Then we'll want Merk or McIntyre to be "ready out of the gate" the year after that. There's little time to build a team anymore. Recruiting the absolute elite QBs and WRs and LBs who are "wonderkins" is all that works in college anymore.
Heupel runs the offense. You changing out coaches but the offense stays the same. What sense does that make? We lost, and everyone is looking for a reason we lost. Sometimes it comes down to Jimmy and Joes. We're almost over the hump. The Tony B show is on this very topic as I type. The offense is definitely stagnant. Do we need dynamic WRs, more experience at QB and a tweaking of the system? I think the answer is “all of the above”. If that means different coaches are needed then Heupel needs to recognize that.
That's the problem money HELPS solve these days, though I recall Nick Saban taking a swipe at Ryan Day with "I don't care if you do have money, 20 Million or whatever, if you don't use that money on getting the right guys."A lot of QBs come in not being able to read a defense. Either the system is no longer working or the players he’s brought in are a downgrade over Pruitts players in 2022. Either way, it’s on Heupel to make the adjustments.Heupel runs the offense. Its been two seasons of fairly mediocre offense . Since Golesh left, we barely have open receivers or mismatches etc, and we have them our QB does not hit them. Joey Halzle is QB Coach and OC. Is it time to upgrade there ? I realize Huepel calls the play but it is the OC in the booth that gives him input on what alignment defense is in, what mismatch he sees ..
Same with Kelsey Pope. In two years the WRs have regressed. They still drop catches. They are not very physical in contested catches (outside of Bru). Highly recruited guys have not panned out so far. Folks like Leacock, Nimrod etc are still not SEC level. It almost seems like Pope benefitted in his year 1 from coaching by previous coach (Hyatt breakout etc).
Thoughts ??
The OC is Heupel. Sooooo....very rarely will you see a WR running wide open, unless it is a zone or bust in coverage. At this level, the QB has to throw the WR open to certain spots. Can't throw it too late or too early. There are a lot of things that the QB has to do. The main point of this offense is to run the ball well enough to where the back end of the defense has to cheat up, which provides larger windows, or the routes create mismatches. Nothing is wrong with the offense, but execution. Most plays are the same, but they are run out of different formations to create different looks from the defense. When an offense is executing, the defense will have trouble stopping it.I tend to agree with about our receivers, they can't get seperation. I flat out do not like th oc period.
You should load it up on cfb 25 and see how it works.I was looking at the 49ers coaching staff and they have have an assistant offensive line coach, Cameron Clemmons, who is from Tennessee, was a grad assistant at UT, and got a degree at UT. I love the 49ers offense and think a fusion of some of the blocking schemes the 49ers run with some of the veer and shoot concepts that Heupel runs. I know it's a crazy idea, but just something that I think would be fun
