Offseason OC and WR Coaching Upgrade

Play calling is fine
It was definitely better against UGA the first half. Liked seeing more slants, Xing routes and wheel routes to Sampson out of the backfield. We just don’t have consistent playmakers at receiver. Squirrel gives his all, but we gotta have those big guys step up, get open and make plays more consistently. Nico is off target more than I would like to see and was really sailing the ball high a lot of the night, but he’ll get better.

GA adjusted for the second half with more pressure via weaknesses they saw in our O Line and coverages that keyed on the shorter/swing routes they saw from us.

I think Kirby expected us to run better than we did and once he had that figured out that his D Line/LBs could stop the run AND take care of most of the swing/short routes, he no longer worried about us hitting it deep because our WRs don't get great separation deep like Hyatt and Tillman did.

If you lack a deep threat AND they can stop the run with their D Line/LBs, cheating with the corners and safety to REALLY stop the run and swing/dump to the flats/screen passes is all that's left for the D to draw up. Kirby did at halftime.

We lack the ability this year to punish good teams deep if they pull up the corners and safety. Without that, Heupel's offense isn't that tough to stop nor will high tempo help much.

Its been two seasons of fairly mediocre offense . Since Golesh left, we barely have open receivers or mismatches etc, and we have them our QB does not hit them. Joey Halzle is QB Coach and OC. Is it time to upgrade there ? I realize Huepel calls the play but it is the OC in the booth that gives him input on what alignment defense is in, what mismatch he sees ..

Same with Kelsey Pope. In two years the WRs have regressed. They still drop catches. They are not very physical in contested catches (outside of Bru). Highly recruited guys have not panned out so far. Folks like Leacock, Nimrod etc are still not SEC level. It almost seems like Pope benefitted in his year 1 from coaching by previous coach (Hyatt breakout etc).

Thoughts ??

I have been told repeatedly that Heupel calls he plays. So bringing Golesh”s name into it is dumb. Look at what we had bin 2022. Mainly, a 5th SR QB who had a ton of starting experience. As far as Pope? I don’t know.

Ellarbee and Pope are coaching for their jobs in 2025.

Matthews and Nimrod and Brazzell need to take a major step forward to becoming WR1's next season.

This should be looked at by Heupel to see if there is an upgrade possibility at OC. Heupel is clearly calling the plays and that can still work. Mostly, the offense has been sloppy on execution. That part is on the OC to clean up during practice.

Thoughts? Ain't gonna happen. If someone leaves, it's by their choice. Heupel isn't gonna fire anyone off this staff.

I hear Pruitt is looking for a spot he prefers defense but he's a hybrid and can coach anywhere, remember the Vols QB sneak vs Bama that went minus 99 yards for a Bama TD. I'm enjoying 10-win seasons and the Rip Vol Winkles of the world that slept for 20 years can go back to bed.

Heupel is the most loyal coach with his assistants I have ever seen.

10? How bouts 11, 12, 13 or 14???
10 is the new 8. Coaches are going to be evaluated by Championships FNO; everyone can get the players they think they need. Coaching them up, game planning and in game adjustments will be the measuring stick. The best Head Coaches will NOT have any baggage on their staff.

The GREATEST head coaches of all time have always surrounded themselves with coaches that are just as smart or smarter than themselves. Saban did it constantly. If CJH doesn't understand the benefits of this practice by now, then he won't be here much longer. Phil Fulmer had Cut. His saving grace. He refused to bring in top notch guys because of his ego. Look at what happened with Dave Clawson. Great hire, right? But then refused to let him take the reigns. Unreal.
