Ohio State in More Trouble (merged)

Alabama's textbook recipients paid back everything, but they still vacated wins. In every case I'm aware of prior to the OSU Five, the players have to pay back the benefits in order to be reinstated, but if they participated in any wins between the time they committed the violation and when they got reinstated, the wins get vacated.

So, by your statement here, are you not saying that they were ineligible for the 2010 season due to the fact the violation happened before the season and they didn't pay back the money till after the season?

I don't disagree, Bama.
Perhaps the fact that Ohio State was about to play in a major bowl game with Arkansas had something to do with the wins not being erased.

Your beef is with the NCAA. Yes, what OSU's players did has gotten many other players declared ineligible. The NCAA screwed up by not making OSU vacate the games the players participated in when they should have been ineligible (see Bama's textbook situation.)

But since the NCAA decided that the players were eligible during the 2010 season, in spite of the infractions, they can't possibly accuse Tressel of playing ineligible players. Those players were never ineligible according to the NCAA's own ruling.

That's how I'm reading it, too... which, in some part of my strange world, is somehow similar to the offense purposely taking a penalty in order to stop the clock and set up for a game winning field goal....

and by that, I mean ---> NOT COOL.

Bamawriter-
Do you not see the problem with Tressel going before the NCAA now and saying that this isn't that big of a deal because you, NCAA, already ruled these players eligible and didn't penalize the school.

The NCAA is going to respond by stating that the violation wasn't considered serious because you represented that you immediately self reported and agreed to educate the players. Now we find out you knew about the issues prior to the season, failed to report, failed to educate, and misrepresented your knowledge to the NCAA. The timing of the self reporting now seems remarkably self serving as does my silence was completely for the benefit of my players because i was scared for their safety argument.

Wins are going to be taken.

every ohio st fan i have talked to say tressel is innocent and the ncaa will levy no more punishment.

ESPN just said Tressels violation is a 10.5 on a scale of 1-10. ESPN usually has it right. They also say that the ncaa is not taking this lightly and will be salivating when it gets to their committee. To think about it only the Newton's have gotten off clean in all these years of reported ncaa violations. They are just gangster with theirs. But it looks like Tressel's goose is cooked. They will have to give up the 2010 season and OSU will probably be hit like USC. They made it very clear that this wasn't an assistant that got busted this is the head coach.

The NCAA does not want to get involved with a black church in ATL and an alleged money exchange with the MNC star QB... I'm just saying.

it's ridiculous but given their history it's more than I expected. I guess OSU is just too big to fail

Wait, is Gordan Gee still at tOSU? The "academic" that essentially threw dirt on Vandy's already dead athletic department?

I had the impression that he always postured himself as someone that placed the school's virtue and integrity over athletics... or at least that is how I seemed to understand his line of thinking at Vandy?

If SV had been fired yesterday, I think that would have ended any hopes Bruce has of returning. As it stands, the NCAA may hammer both so hard that it is impossible to keep them, but the perception is that both UT and the SEC took the violations much more seriously than tOSU. Remember UT levied a 7 figure fine, cancelled his contract and suspended him recruiting for a year. The SEC stepped in and suspended him for 1/2 the SEC season.

Incidentally, the fine levied by tOSU was the same amount he earned for making it to a BCS game. :good!: I fully expect the NCAA to step in and suspend SV for more games (presumably as the authority figure he deserves at least as much as the 5 game suspension received by the players).

And what sanctions did Slive and Auburn impose on the football program?

It was an excuse and only an excuse.

Is it too late for these players to enter the supplemental draft (provided the NFL gets their act together)?

Or will they just wait it out and go next season?

They didn't force OSU to vacate any wins from last season. If the players were deemed ineligible, the first thing to happen would be a vacation of wins. They are being penalized with a five game suspension, but they were not declared ineligible.

Fine...but they are serving the 5 game suspension next year because this came to light at the end of the season.

If it would have come to light at the beginning of the season, they would have been forced to sit out 5 games during the season a la A.J. Green. Thus, they were playing in games they wouldn't have been playing in had Tressel not withheld probative information. You follow? With full and appropriate disclosure, they would have been ineligible.

Not sure why you're having such a great deal of difficulty grasping this relatively basic concept. It is really really simple and yet you appear to be struggling mightily.

2 words- bama-writer. It's the mother of all oxymorons... I kid, I kid. (But I do find it ironic that he doesn't capitalize Bama...)

I feel like im taking crazy pills. Im sitting here watching espn and NOTHING. Its not even on the scroll under "lead" or anything. How can basically the only real sports channel be this blatantly bias??? Their too big and singular to be allowed to demolish some programs and hold others up at their chosing. What can be done? The biggest sports story is become the biggest sports scandal and will fade away like the sun set.

I'm with you ubc... Even Mike and Mike, who were on him hard and fast yesterday morning, have softened their stance and seemed to be making excuses for him. They actually played the "dad" card and said that, as a coach, he has a responsibility to treat the players like his kids. And wouldn't you try to protect your son?

I mean... just... Wow! I wonder what ESPN's afternoon memo to M&M read like yesterday.

I'm comparing it to every single case that I can recall. And I don't want to be misunderstood, I think OSU and Tressel should get hammered over this. The problem is, they should have been hammered over the infraction. This is the first case I can recall where an infraction occurred and the players played before the NCAA acted and yet the wins weren't vacated.

I am not arguing that the players shouldn't have been declared ineligible, they clearly should have. I'm simply stating the clear fact that they weren't. And it's really not hard to figure out why.

Missed UT fans defending Kiffin or Pearl? Our fans were coming up with some of the same crazy kind of excuses.

true but the evidence is already out there with tressel. after the letter was released by the ncaa on tennessee i think everybody knew we were screwed. pearl should be fired in my opinon.

I'd say Tressel is every bit as screwed. If OSU keeps him, they could be hit hard as well.

Are you asking why the players weren't declared retroactively ineligible when this came to light in December? I believe the answer to that question is that all five players have remaining eligibility, so it just makes more sense to suspend them (i.e. render them ineligible to play) for 5 of next season's games. This way the players themselves are actually punished.
