First, the NCAA isn't going to get into the hypotheticals about what might have happened had the five players not played. So the results of the season won't be factored in to any potential sanctions. That's not how they roll. Plus, they already chose not to rule the five players ineligible for the games they played in, so the NCAA didn't think enough of the violations to change the record book.
Second, Tressel's only offense would be lying about the violations. He didn't commit any other violation. Pearl lied about his own actions. What mitigating factor makes Pearl's behavior "far less" egregious than Tressel's?
That post is filled to the brim with stupid.
1. tOSU self reported sometime AFTER December 7, 2010. They claimed to have FIRST heard about it on December 7, 2010. Therefore no potentially ineligible player ever played a game with the knowledge of the university.
2. Now we find out that the SV may have known for the entire season that a half dozen players had serious eligibility issues and he failed to contact the university or NCAA.
3. You are correct that the NCAA doesn't engage in conjecture, but if the new allegations are true (and the AD and president returning to the university for a 7 pm presser seem to lend some credence to that possibility) then the NCAA will likely vacate the wins.
4. I'm not comparing the Pearl v. SV violations, but these allegations definitely fall under the major infraction category.
For arguments sake, he he would have knowingly withheld information, which is basically the same as lying. His players also received $$ and tats, which is of more value than a $5 bbq sammich. These players also played in games for OSU.
But Tressel's only violation was the lie/failure to disclose. Pearl committed his own violations.
I'm not defending Tressel. If he knew, he probably should get fired. I'm simply saying that if OSU fires Tressel, Tennessee is going to get destroyed by the media for continuing to employ Pearl.
I don't think Tressel should be fired if it's true. Too many brownie points built up and positives for the University to fire him for a bad decision, imo.

You're missing the point I was making. I was directly responding to a poster who was trying to say Tressel's actions are worse than Pearl's, and part of the logic was that the OSU guys played in games.
The knowledge of a staff member has rarely ever determined the eligibility of the players. The infractions were what they were, and the NCAA decided they didn't merit a loss of eligibility. Tressel's knowledge of the infractions doesn't change the nature or severity of the infractions.
The knowledge of staff and school has always played a role in the penalties.

Could lead to penalties for Tressel, but either the kids were eligible or they weren't. Tressel's knowledge will not change that fact. It would be a new precedent if the NCAA suddenly declares them ineligible solely based on the new info that Tressel was told before the season.
