Ohio State in More Trouble (merged)

I was discussing this with someone in the other thread. I think Pearl needs to go, but I don't think minor violations compare to ignoring your players breaking rules. I like Tressel, so I'm a little saddened by this.

What if they handle it like Tennessee and potentially cut him lose later?

I don't see how you look at the ass-kicking Pearl is about to get and come up with that punishment.

Big difference here is BP didn't play ineligible players. He lied to the NCAA about recruiting violations, none of which had a direct impact on games played.

If sweatervest had done what he is contractually supposed to do, Prior and Co. wouldn't have played in a handful of games last season.

EDIT:
Sorry, I guess I missed your point at first. You're right, based on what may happen to BP, tOSU should have thought this punishment out a bit more.

I don't think the NCAA is going to very impressed by the "Hey, lets throw out some window dressing sanctions and see if that appeases them" approach going forward.

Tressel's suspension is a joke!! He has to miss the Akron & Toledo games. All suspensions should start being conference games and not the BS filler games like these. Might help with some of the players too if they new they would miss a conference game.

I know. It's sooooo lame. I can't stand Ohio state, but since alot of the sports media whent there they get a million free passes.

Bet the NCAA wishes that they had suspended Pryor and his buds for the bowl game

This is just the school's punishment. Like when UT prohibited BP from recruiting and took $1,000,000 from his salary.

tOSU will still get it from the NCAA.

The one point someone bought up in the other thread is the players weren't ruled ineligible, were they? Would that make a difference?

I agree, but that seems like what Tennessee did.

Maybe in theory, but 2 patsy non-conferenxe games versus 8 conference games? Pearl's was a legitimate punishment, at least. I could coach OSU to victory over Akron and Toledo.

True, but it doesn't seem like they are taking a hard line to avoid tough punishment. Akron and Toledo? Might jeopardize their Ohio State Championship they win every year. I think they only play 2-3 games out of state every year.

But Tennessee didn't suspend Pearl for 8 conference games.

When you violate amateurism rules, you're technically ineligible until the 'AA reinstates you. The 'AA reinstated them, with the suspensions, after Ohio State reported. Thus, those guys played a whole season in which they weren't eligible under the rules.

All right, thanks for clarifying. In that case, this sounds a lot like Todd McNair at USC, which means it could be ugly.

Pearl's 8 game suspension was from the SEC, not the school. By making him sit 2 games you could argue that tOSU is hitting SV harder than we hit CBP, although, financially, Pearl lost much more.

Will be interesting to see if the BigTen makes a decision like Slive did and suspends him for half of their season.

Big 10 could easily follow SEC's example and suspend Tressel for a certain number of conference games on top of his 2 gamer. Now that the media got a whiff, this story will be FULLY vetted, I'm sure.

I would be shocked if blohio state got more than a slap on the wrist.they bring in alot of money, besides what other team can come get beat by one of our s e c teams in the nc this year.

Mistake on my part. I thought that was a self imposed deal. What did Tennessee impose upon itself?

Bruce Pearl and the top assistant were suspended from off-campus recruiting for one year. The #2 assistant was suspended for 6 months, and the third assistant was suspended for 3 months.

I believe there was a reduction in official visits, but I'm not positive on that. And, they did not allow official visits during Florida football weekend. I think there were other smaller punishments, like a brief reduction in phone calls. The biggest self-imposed punishment was the off-campus recruiting ban.
