Oil Rig Explosion

Right, drilling closer to shore means drilling further from the center of the deposit, as I understand it. Less efficient extraction.

Maybe overseas can drop by and let us know for sure on that.

Well, good news that the suction tube that was inserted is at least pumping some of the oil into the tankers. Hopefully this will slow slow the leak, but it sounds like they only pumped about 1,000 barrels in about a day. If that is the rate, we still have a ways to go.

On his show today comedian Rush Limbaugh is blaming "environmentalist wackos" for this because they "force" oil companies to drill for oil so far away that it's miles below the surface.

According to him there's plenty of oil to be had on our doorstep.

Apparently he doesn't realize that after a while the easiest to obtain oil gets depleted and you have to go to a more inaccessible place to get more.

But his point is somewhat valid - there is plenty of oil that is much more accessible but environmental concerns (including things like "views") prevent accessing such deposits. As a result, deep water is where we drill. Eventually we may have to go deep water but we don't necessarily have to now.

At least something they've tried is at least partially working.

i haven't heard him recently, but when oil was at $200 he ranted every night about how the major oils were controlling the price and how we need to tax the crap out of them.

Which even if they were controlling the price, taxing them would only further increase the price...

In recent days, the Obama administration has assembled a "dream team" of scientists to deal with the leak, including experts in robotics, physics, X-ray technology and the hydrogen bomb. Energy Secretary Steven Chu, a physicist who won the Nobel Prize, met with BP engineers in Houston last week and promised that the "intellectual horsepower of the country is engaged in solving this problem."

Oh boy.

not one single soul on this message board would not want to have a 1K BPD Oil Well on their land. 1,000 BPD is nothing to sneeze at

I meant compared to the at the very minimum 5,000 bpd dumping into the ocean (and quite possibly much more than that). I am saying the spill is nowhere near under control.

Don't believe everything you read or hear in the news. It may seem like things are taking a long time to happen - but, there are now four drilling rigs on location at the Horizon site. Two are drilling relief wells and the other two are working to contain/stop the leak. There are multiple ROV boats working in the area as well. The insertion tube was the first step in what will (hopefully) be complete containment of the well.

Let's cross our fingers that things continue to go well.

Hey no need to worry about this oil spill, guys. BP exec said that if you think about it, the oil spill is "tiny compared to the size of the ocean"...so it should be fine! What an idiot!

Wow. That's like your grandma getting cancer and someone saying "ya, but she's old."

I saw video yesterday of one of the Drill Rigs already flaring, which is a good sign

and a PDF on these infamous Tarballs

I'm getting the impression that either:

the gurus really don't know what kind of environmental impact this spill is having, or

they're doing a good job of hiding it.
