I'm interested in some ideas, as well. Any recommendations along the Blue Ridge Parkway? I thought it might be nice to do some scenic driving, find a nice spot to stay, and hike a little. Would need to have some decent dining options.

We went to Grandfather Mountain the day after Battle at Bristol. It was a pretty scenic drive and was a fun tour. I'm sure there are plenty of places to stay in that area.

One good place is Mt. Pisgah, they have a lodge, restaurant, and store. Lots of hiking and if you take hwy 276 to Brevard there are many places to see and things to do down that road. Linville gorge is another great place, right outside of Boone and Blowing Rock.

Linville is the same area as Grandfather Mtn, right?

It is, the whole area is beautiful. Grandfather mountain is good to see once, much like a tourist trap. The Linn Cove Viaduct on the Blue Ridge Parkway is a marvel of engineering, it skirts the side of Grandfather mountain. The drive on the BRP from Asheville up to Boone/Blowing Rock is phenomenal.

We ended up at the Old Edwards Inn in Highlands, NC on the recommendation of a friend. It is absolutely phenomenal, and the town offers a number of terrific restaurants and an abundance of waterfall and mountain hikes within a few miles.

Nice place. I go up there about 4 times a year. Did you walk down the trail under the waterfall? The poor Hemlocks have been decimated over there too.

Yessir! We also hiked to one of the most amazing views I've seen on the cliffs of Whiteside Mountain today.

I could definitely retire in a place like this one day.

Other interesting things we've seen:

McLaren P1 parked right outside our room all weekend.

Drummer from the Deftones unable to complete sentences or keep himself in the upright position.

Love the highlands! It's a beautiful area. When we went we could not go behind the waterfall as it was blocked off, not sure why, but maybe due to cold previous icy conditions recently.

Ha! Neither one of us are big drinkers.

I just want to enjoy seeing someplace new, the culture and history, music and food.

Well for food I would suggest Brennans (which is where bananas foster was created) and Commanders Palace. Both are pricy, but worth it.

Also, be sure to go to the Gumbo Shop for a meal. Very good!!! Not pricey and pretty casual. Right in the French Quarter. They have a shrimp appetizer that's not on the menu that is really great.

Wife and I are going in about three weeks. Love the food and the architecture. This trip we're going to do more of the music scene.
