No looking at the score now, it is a completely irrelevant call.
Looking at the score down by 5, it was a stupid call. Stoops is suppsoed to be a defensive guru. Supposedly halftime adjustments were made, OU came out and shut WVU down on their first 2 possessions. There should have been a feeling of, we made some good defensive changes. Not, we're effed, after cutting the lead to 5.
I think Stoops knows enough about defense to know that his wasn't going to slow down the Mountaineers. That is exactly why he called the onsides kick. If he were playing a less explosive offense, I would be willing to bet quite a bit of money he would not make that call. It was made out of desperation.
Apparently they were so overmatched it wouldn't have mattered even if they did recover. Chances are you are not going to recover and you just told your team that cut the lead to 5, hey I don't think we can beat this team.
At any point? It is not insignificant that WVU did nothing the first 2 possessions of the secodn half.
Does going for it on fourth down tell your defense, "Hey, I don't think you can stop this team"?
I think Bob Stoops thought he could win, but the best way to do it would be to limit WV's possessions. Jeff Fisher almost beat a great Colts team with an absolutely horrible Titans team a few years ago with the same strategy.
I think that is an aggressive form of gambling. It is the offense saying we can overpower them for the first down. Onside kicks are much more luck oriented, more surprise and luck of the bounce you are counting on.
If he would have called a Hail mary with 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter I would have called that stupid too.
so, it's basically a stupid call because it failed and WV scored.
Is it still stupid if it succeeds and OU still gets gashed for huge plays and loses?
Sadly, the element of surprise does not work to your advantage if you do something when everyone expects you to do it.
Stoops was being aggressive because he knew his defense couldn't stop WV.
It is stupid because of the way the game was going. SO far in the second half we have WVU doing nothing and OU scoring 10 in a row. You are in the game at down 5, ride it some and see where it goes. Not call a play that I would say has a very very low percentage of working and gets the WVU fans and players back into the game.
