Ole Miss Racist?

I remember back in 94 a quote from Florida's Jack Jackson saying he never even considered Ole Miss and did not understand why any black athlete would consider going there as long as they had colonel reb and the confederate flags waving and he was from MS. So my hypothetical question is if you were an ole miss fan and the name cost you using rivals .35 on average yearly would you then want it changed that's like from averaging 3.5 to 3.15 stars every year what would you want.

I'm not sure if I understand the question, but are you asking if I would be willing to sacrifice .35 stars in recruiting to keep a mascot? Also, where did the .35 come from? Is that an arbitrary number?

I would sacrifice the players to keep the name/mascot. To me the tradition and people who've actually walked the university halls mean more than players who chose not to come.

Their history is, what it is. Just like much of the south. But like much of the south, they have grown beyond the bonds of the past. Should we forget the past? Hell no. A majority of the people have recognized the wrongs of that past - and do celebrate the rights of today. The PC crowd need to get over their slighted sensibilities and understand that we all don't think alike. In other words, lets just call it Ol Piss and move along.

Dixie, rebels, and all things similar to it are not to be celebrated. By nick naming your school, or playing that song, based on our nations history shows a complete lack of knowledge. I did make a snarky first post because I know how the argument is going to go and it's just stupid. Blah blah blah southern heritage. Blah blah blah the civil war wasn't about slavery. Blah blah blah confederate flag. I agree the PC crowd goes way to far. However wanting to celebrate the southern heritage of the civil war era is ignorant.

I am thrilled they got rid of the Confederate soldier mascot. I don't care what you believe the civil war was or was not about. It was a sad, bloody and brutal part of American history that shouldn't be represented or glorified that way. Same goes for if there were a team that uses a union soldier as a mascot.

Patriots should change their name then.

Anyway, all this crap about ole miss and redskins, while FSU is running a white guy with war paint out on the field throwing spears and their fans doing the war chant. IMO what FSU is doing is way more offending then any other team, but you never hear anything about it.

Because the Seminole nation endorses it..

So if Jessie Jackson endorses something, all black people should be ok with it.

I wonder if they would endorse it, if FSU didn't give them a butt load of money?

Rather have Al Sharpton.. That area is Seminole country and if they endorse it I don't see a problem with it.. Now if the whole Indian nations don't agree with Redskins then that's that..

Really? Are you Comparing the American Revolutionary War and the Civil War? One was an embarrassing, unnecessary slaughter fest where brother fought brother because of the inability of our politicians to communicate with each other. The other was the war that formed this country.

Or, if you say both wars are about freedom and in that case you should still be embarrassed to portray a confederate soldier of any kind.

Never saw a German person waving around a Nazi flag claiming it was about heritage, pretty sure they are embarrassed of that heritage and they don't embrace it.

Colonel Reb was not a Confederate soldier. The name implies that, but he's technically a planter or plantation owner. Not necessarily any better but just clarifying.

If all the symbolisms asscociated with Ole Miss that conjure up memories of that era are to be ridiculed then state/national government need to rid themselves of publicly funded support of Civil War monuments, battlefields, plantations etc. I don't see a difference in a state supported and funded memorial and a state supported university.

For example, the Jefferson Davis Monument at his birthplace in Hopkinsville, KY is ran by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Inside the gift shop you can buy all sorts of Confederate flag themed memorabilia; memorabilia that is in all likelihood provided for purchase by state funds. Unless one argues that they're bought with the monies that come from tourism and are therefore private funds.

You do realize Dixie was penned by a Yankee and was considered a national folk song before the War? Lincoln had it played multiple times at campaign functions and the day after Lee's surrender, he addressed the media at the White House and said, "I always thought Dixe was one of the best tunes I ever heard" before the band struck it up. Guess Lincoln was a racist and closet southern apologist?

If this is true then I never knew it. Always looked like a depiction of Robert E. Lee to me. Assuming it is true I still can't look at it and gleam from it that is in fact a plantation owner. Call me a skeptic. This kind of confusion is obviously part of the problem if it is true.

Those are memorials, not mascots, we are talking about a mascot. There is a holocaust memorial. Not because the holocaust was a great thing, but because it was a tragic thing that we should all remember and it reminds us to avoid another tragedy like it. A mascot is supposed invoke pride and passion in team sports.

I did not know that. I feel bad for the composer who had his song hijacked by a bunch of dbags.

The mascot is wearing a suit and ribbon styled bow tie to signify him as a "southern gentlemen farmer", he's not in confederate garb. Not sure how anyone can look at that mascot and think it represents a soldier.

Don't assume it's true, do some research on the topic. Or better yet I'll do some for you: Colonel Reb Foundation

Sorry to offend you but it's folks like you that make the issues bigger than they should be, because it's all emotion based with little to no knowledge or facts. Is your family originally from the South or have any affiliation with the War? You speak from a holier than thou pedestal but provide little substance to support your stance other than "it's" affiliated with the south therefore it's bad and should be banned ("it" being music, words, names etc).

It's interesting to see where so many Tennesseeans fall on this issue and how many, not just on here, tend to oppose the Ole Miss stance. That's not surprising though given that TN reluctantly seceded late (especially east TN), was the first Southern state to be readmitted to the Union and had very little in common, from an economic standpoint, with the rest of the South.
