I am thrilled they got rid of the Confederate soldier mascot. I don't care what you believe the civil war was or was not about. It was a sad, bloody and brutal part of American history that shouldn't be represented or glorified that way. Same goes for if there were a team that uses a union soldier as a mascot.

The Redskins of Washington should be banned too by your way of thinking. Never mind a Native American designed the logo for their helmet, and his tribe doesn't have a problem with it. Lib on bro.

I always thought they should have gone with the Rebel Alliance from Star Wars. Personally I wouldn't attend a school called Rebels or send my kids to one but if they want to go on being named that eh

Just a hypothetical situation; if your kid is offered a full scholarship for any reason to Ole Miss and it costs you $0 you wouldn't do it on the basis of a mascot?

On the other hand, you approach the situation exactly as one should. It's offensive to you, therefore you don't want to be associated with it, rather than choosing to associate with it and then after the fact complaining about it.

The mascot represents a ideology. The ideology is what keeps my sons or daughter from that school. It's not much of a principle if it can be thrown aside for few thousand dollars.

I admire your honesty and hard line. With that said, I'd encourage people to spend more time in MS. That ideology is a thing of the past down there, for the most part. I spend a decent amount of time in the MS Delta for work and the race relations there are as good and probably better than any I've seen in the South. They've come a long way over the last 40-50 yrs and looking at things now from the outside, it's hard to believe things were ever as bad as they were.

You are exactly right.

I grew up about 15 minutes from the Mississippi border and I know firsthand what you are saying is true. My views extend only to the University in that regard.

Do you actually want to know or are you looking for a small opening to harp on and eventually call me a "reverse racist"?
I am interested in the avatar but don't know what a reverse racist is. A racist is a racist regardless of race, color or creed.

The mascot is wearing a suit and ribbon styled bow tie to signify him as a "southern gentlemen farmer", he's not in confederate garb. Not sure how anyone can look at that mascot and think it represents a soldier.

Don't assume it's true, do some research on the topic. Or better yet I'll do some for you: Colonel Reb Foundation

Yes!! The confederacy wore blue and red three piece suits don't you remember?

Does this guy look like a confederate soldier to you?

His name is Colonel Reb for goodness sake. And here is a portrait of Robert E Lee himself with his stars along his neck and oh...look at that, a blue 3 piece suit all the way down to the same tie. Google Robert E Lee. Most of his pictures and portraits are depicted exactly as Colonel Reb. They even bare an eerie resemblance. Not that it is absurd to choose a mascot and just throw your school colors on him anyway. You know, I am sure Davy Crockett himself was outlined in the color orange you know.

Ole Miss calls him a "Planter", says that the inspiration came from a black man, Blind Jim Ivey, that served popcorn at games for years yet you continue to insist he's a confederate soldier. FTR, Lee is wearing a gray suit, seeing as how the confederates wore gray. Col Reb wears red or a combo of red and navy. Give it up, he's not a soldier. Just because you want that to be the case to make your point somehow more valid doesn't make it true.

A rose by any other name..............

They are still Racists............ by a larger percentage than most every other school in the United States.

I'm surprised they don't have more drowning deaths on campus when they get a heavy downpour. Maybe they keep their noses covered.

Do you have stats to support that or are you more racist by simply making an ignorant racist assumption that the university is racist because tue school is in Mississippi and in the south. Otherwise we would be hearing the same racist crap cry about the Running Rebels of UNLV. It stands to reason that a Running Rebel is more racist than a regular rebel. It implies he's chasing something.

Also, I am now offended that the NY Yankees continue to be allowed to use that name and mascot. The moniker"Yankee" is offensive.

First of all, I don't think the colors matter, just as I made the point about characterizations in my previous post you didn't address. I won't argue with you over what color that obviously is.

You my friend know your stuff. If you travel to Oxford for the game, I'll have a shot of whiskey and a beer waiting for you.

What's the difference between the UNLV Rebel mascot and Col. Reb?

I believe they call him planter as in plantation owner. He was not their mascot until the 70's which seems a little like a big f u to the civil rights movement. Kind of like how Georgia did not have the stars and bars on their flag until 1956.

There's nothing to argue in regards to Lee's color. He's in Confederate attire which was grey. Have you never had a history lesson before?
