One of the things that really gets me....

Rettig had one offer from a school in Coldsville. I don't see why the staff needed to rush to get him, especially when they weren't that interested.

Ok let's be honest here guys. We can speculate all we want, but we have NO CLUE what's going on behind closed doors. But let's face it, the staff doesn't want to offer QB's just to offer them. And I'm sure they are 100 times better at watching film than any of us can ever hope to be. While we haven't garnered any commitments, can any of you tell me the last time we were in the final two to four schools for 5 or 6 top ranked QB prospects? We can't just magically sign whoever we want. Think of how tough the sell to TN is right now. New coaching staff, coming off 2 of our worst seasons ever, and playing in a powerhouse conference. Coming to TN is still pretty risky from the perspective of a QB. Brand new system with no guarantee of a turn around. Most of us here don't think about that because we know how special our staff really is. Unfortunately we can't expect kids who can go play just about anywhere to be knocking down our doors for a spot.

And whose to say one of these kids might not change their mind on down the road? If we noticeably improve on the field this year and look to be moving in the right direction, we will at the very least have the Top 2011 QB prospects seriously considering us.

Seems Matt Ryan played for BC and he's doing well now. As far as the interested part, you are correct, but they still are at an impass with QB recruiting and if they weren't that interested they shouldn't have offered just to save face.

+1

He is a Catholic kid and he got an offer from a catholic school in a BCS conference. He is sure to be the starter there barring something strange by 2011 maybe 2010.

I don't really understand the issue. Get mad at the coaches all you want no one knows what is going on. And Rettig to Grayson is not a big jump if it is one.

I liked Rettig but lets get real. These guys are not 5 stars. The coaches need to bring in the guy they want. And I back there moce as they know way more than I about this.

I will freak out in February if we do not have a QB.

I have been back and forth on this. I thought Scroggins was a vol then something would make me feel like he was USC lock. I honestly have no clue now. But I still feel like something is up.

1. Scroggins got the offer from USC at Rising Stars Camp and didn't commit.
2. July 25th annoucement date would be vintage Kiffin. Close to SEC media days.
3. Staff didn't seem to go after Rettig hard at all. They did offer but I still don't feel like we recruited the kid hard. Almost like he was a #2 in the same class.
4. Scroggins mentioned "depth chart" time after time as a factor
5. UT still in it with Bailey who is scheduled to vist in early August
6. USC talk right after the Rising Stars camp about Rettig and Bray
7. I don't see the need in putting off the anouncement if he is USC bound. PC and Kiffin go back. I don't think if he knew he was coming to USC PC would leave Tennessee in holding pattern seeing how important a QB is for us in this class. No need for the pub. You are USC.

Maybe all of this is off base. Who knows but something isn't right and with the recruiters we have I don't buy the slow playing deal. I think they are pretty sure of how this is going to play out or they would have been all over someone. JMO. I have been wrong before. Maybe I am drinking the Koolaid but I am starting to feel like we may end up with Scroggins after this commitment from Rettig.

Other recruits, fans, other people?? There could be a multitude of things that I do know why they did, but when you offer a kid it's because you feel he can play for you. If they didn't think he could play at some level here, why offer him?? Because they are desperate??

I'd say they wanted to hang onto him so he could be further evaluated and maybe brought aboard if he showed something. They could extend him an offer, but they aren't obligated to accept his commitment. I don't see how giving him an offer saves face at all.

I agree man, it's been a whirlwind recruitment for this kid. I just hope his pops doesn't talk him into staying close. In all honesty picking TN is clearly his best option. The opportunity to start from day one and be credited with turning the program around vs. having to work your butt off for 3 years to be the third-string QB at USC. Just doesn't make much sense...

I agree, but he was at camp and they had plenty of time to evaluate his film before BC ever offered. I just don't think that the staff is earning brownie points with other recruits the way they are handling the QB situation and maybe others as well. They have to remember that this team went 5-7 last year and they don't have an identity on offense at all and need to treat these recruits very carefully early in the process.

Based on the number of recruits with UT in their top fives, I'd say whatever they are doing isn't too offensive.

If they don't list us in a Top 2, I don't think someone is too interested in us, mainly because those Top 5's change so much.

What makes me wonder is we seem to be in it for the top 2 or 3 guys at about every spot on the field and then you look at the QB and everyone seems to think we don't have a clue how to recruit them.

I look at this different. I think Kiffin and company know exactly what they want and the best way to handle it. Hopefully that means getting Scroggins. If it doesn't. Well then it doesn 't. I trust this staff. I will give them time to get the players they need and want in here.

That would be cool.

Honestly, other than Heaps, his film looks the best to me. I'm not a talent evaluator by any means, but he looks talented. Obviously, he wasn't recruited for a reason though.

My point is just that it doesn't matter how many stars they have or how many offers they have. Especially at the QB position, the skills that set the best apart are largely mental and emotional.

The thing that pisses me off is the fact that this whole QB deal is screwing up our chances with other elite blue-chippers. If I'm a playmaker, theres no way I go to Tennessee until they get big time QBs.

That's ridiculous.

Not really. I have read to many articles on different sites to see that it's July and if even if we are in someone's Top 5 it doesn't mean much if anything at this point. I have seen too many Top 5's change to believe otherwise. I would put Top 3 as the limit to gauge a recruits interest in us here at this point in time. Also, most of the time the bottom 3 of a Top 5 changes more often than the Top 2. Like I said, it's July also.

I don't know about that. We certainly weren't always in the top 2 of the likes of Bryce Brown and Janzen Jackson.

If we are going to try to make a living at flipping guys late in the process, like we did those two, we won't be successful. That's just my opinion though.

It's not like these guys have only 5 offers. If the staff was pissing everyone off, UT would not be mentioned among the few teams elite prospects are considering.
