Open heart surgery

Just from my dad's experience when he did the double by-pass....take off all the time they suggest. Don't try and rush to being back to your "normal" life. If my dad would have stayed out of work the entire time and not been caught up with other things I think it would have worked a lot better for him.

Good luck with your surgery and I hope everything works out great for you. Just be patient with the recovery and take things slow. Prayers for you!

I'm sure it will be a few days before Volger returns to the thread, but I think it would be awesome for us to continue the encouraging words and keep him in our prayers.

Ma Ferguson had multiple by-passes four years ago and is doing well. Two uncles have had open heart procedures within the past three years and are boisterous as ever. The surgery should go fine. The aftercare will be challenging early on but certainly can be done provided instructions are followed. Lighting a candle tonight.

Bypass surgery is one of the best advances in modern medicine. My grandfather had quintuple bypass surgery in 1997, and he is still with us and quite healthy.

I've had open heart surgery ,they replaced a valve and you will be fine, just do what they say as far as getting up and around, don't over do it

I walked up and down the hall way, while I was there and it took me several days to be able to get from my room(the last one) to the other end, that was my goal and I had to sit down a lot,I went from one nurse's area to the next, having to stop at the desk and taking there chairs :)

that was a little over 10 years ago and everything has been fine heart wise since then, the only thing I would do different,is not have the mechanical valve put in,just to avoid all the trips to the heart doctor for PT checks and having to keep track of it and the meds,I would just as soon have the surgery done again, but that is just my opinion

Stay strong Volger. I pray you do not sneeze or cough over the next several weeks.

Amen to that. The drain tube cuts hurt worse for me, but everything hurts when you cough.

God bless Volger. May you recover well.

8am tomorrow scheduled for me. Pretty scared about this and wanted to get others opinions on this. I'm 54 years old and the surgeon said I could get another 20 years with the procedure.

I had a heart attack on 16 Oct. Had the catheter procedure a couple days later. They couldn't do a stint job as the blockage was too great.

I opted to move back to Mo for the procedure and aftercare as my wife couldn't logistically deal with it at home. I have heard and read nothing but positive reviews from the surgeon.

Anyone else have this done, and what was your aftercare experience?

TIA

just saw this volger, hope it went well
good luck, and godspeed

God speed Volger. Almost 24 hours since your OP so I hope everything went well and you are recovering comfortably. Praying that everything went well and you are on the road to recovery.

The advice from people I know who have had it is to learn to laugh silently and to go about your daily activities without coughing. It sounds innocuous but laughing and coughing are going to hurt like hell in your recovery.

I hope it's a speedy one!

My Dad had heart surgery 2 years ago, and it was probably a week before he really had his faculties about him
