Opinions/Feelings about Jeremy Banks

I thought he was the 2nd coming of #15 after last season, he was certainly leaving it all on the field. Looks like once he achieved some success he was unprepared to handle it. He might make an NFL team but I doubt it.

Personally, after his arrest and the footage that came out of him in the cop car I dismissed him as another UThug who needed to go. Then over the next couple years he proved me wrong and I was very proud of him. As far as how it ended, I don’t know the facts. I only know the rumors. There are 2 sides to every story. His history leads me to believe there is probably something there, but at the same time, I feel like he has grown up a lot since that day in the squad car. Nobody’s perfect. God knows I’m not. I wish him well and hope he continues to grow.

Pure speculation, but if there actually was a confrontation between Hooker/ Milton against Banks, my gut tells me to side with the QBs 😂, but we don’t know what happened or didn’t and probably never will.. He was a great player for us, but we need to look toward the future

I get the impression that, to his credit, Heupel will always take the diplomatic route; he will not publicly criticize his players or air "dirty laundry," so we probably will never know the facts of this matter.

Having said that, Coach Heupel will be able to use the South Carolina loss as a powerful teaching tool for many years to come, most notably with respect to the critical importance of team unity, maintenance of laser-like focus, regardless of the opponent, and the difficulty of winning on the road in the SEC. 'tis a painful lesson for our guys to experience, but, on the way back to the mountaintop, there will inevitably be such moments along the maturation pathway to consistently playing championship football.

You are wise beyond your years. Nicely said.

From what I read, Hurd was lied to by Butch. Apparently that was a common theme. I have a hard time blaming Hurd. Butch never utilized him or Kamara right anyway. I don't really hold it against Banks either but he was a bone head always doing bone headed things.
And Hurd never had legal trouble (unless there’s something I’ve forgotten)

From a character standpoint, I’m siding with Milton and Hooker over banks…..every day and twice in Sunday.

Huepel and Tim Banks didn't recruit or sign Banks to his role here at Tennessee, they inherited him and everything else that goes with that.
I'm not so sure Banks would have been academically eligible for the bowl game anyway this year, such that his decision to declare for the draft may have been made for him and he was simply making the best of a difficult situation, most talent with his projected draft position doesn't pass any opportunity to play and gather and garner additional exposure.

The haters intentionally blind themselves to a fundamental reality. JB, is among the players who didn't desert the Vols, when droves of others did. So bent are some on damning him for his faults, they dismiss his loyalty to the UT, when it really mattered the most.

Banks is very talented. I hope he focuses on getting his head straight. Such a waste of potential if he doesn't. I think his attitude will come into play when it comes to draft day.

I don’t think we’ll ever really know the full story behind the pre-South Carolina stupidity, but if even 1/3 of that is true, he’s a biggest reason why this team missed a GOLDEN opportunity to be in position for something even bigger than what they achieved.

I am thankful for the plays Banks made this year - and there were a lot of them. Good luck to him.

Hopefully, Heupel established that this type of crap will not be tolerated in our program again so we can avoid a repeat of the same.

I think most realize that JB, like most people, is pretty much a mixed bag lol… awesome player, nobody can deny he stuck around and gave his all for the team when he played, but we also don’t know what he was like as a teammate either

I think Banks made two mistakes in Dec
His draft status would have been better if he played and he shouldn't have waited till Xmas Eve to decide. It made him look too much like he did it out of spite.

Don't question his toughness on the field, but the pro teams will not put up with mental crap unless you're All Pro

He tanked our season for himself! What may have been this year was lost by the decisions made not to let him play USC game. The implications of that for the future are clear to his team mates though. You screw up, look what happened to Banks. I don't think players will risk that and that's an awesome thing.

You may be correct about Butch Jones on this point but, to be honest, we had an inferior offensive line at that time. There were a lot of great runs by Hurd, where he turned 2-yard losses into 2-yard gains, simply by personal effort after initial contact in the backfield. If Butch promised Jalen the featured spot at running back, well he essentially got that. If he had played behind the "TVA" offensive line, for example, he may well have been a 1,500-yard back.

For all of the criticism properly levied about inadequately using Kamara, one quality that he lacked, compared to Hurd, was the power and size to regularly transform those 2-yard losses into 2-yard gains. With that tandem, it might have been best to turn back the hands of time and frequently use 2-back sets, with Hurd often fulfilling the role of an old-school fullback.

Very true. Yet too many are too eager to cast aside the good and condemn players. Just look at the venom and disdain directed at Milton.

Okay, fair point.. it’s because it’s an anonymous message board and people put every random thought out there 😂

Hurd was flat out lied to. Butch promised him (I don't recall what it was) a style of play best suited to the type of back JH was. Instead, he kept with his general ineffective version of the spread, or whatever he called it. The result was JH getting constantly beat up due to predictable play calls. He went to Oklahoma, got switch to a TE, I think. But the big thing was even during his sit out year, the coach and players praised his team work, willingness to even coach others, and when he played, how hard he played. We also now know that Butch intentionally sabotaged Pig Howard's NFL chances.

Nothing like Hurd. Hurd quit on his team in the middle off a game. When called out on it he tried to play the tough guy until Jauan Jennings put him in his place. The Banks/Hooker situation is 100% on Heup. I love him as as a coach, but he mishandled that situation.
I am not sure if he has had to deal with that before. Hopefully, he has leaned how to handle it if it comes up again. Unfortunately, with NIL it will.

Today if it happens in the locker room it eventually ends up on social media

Right. Folks don't realize what players got away with before social media was even a word. Players showing up drunk and reeking of liquor. Having to send someone to a hotel room to rouse a player out of bed cause he slept late with last night's hooker. Even having to have someone go town and find a player, so he would be at the game or at practice. Some of the stories, you just wouldn't believe, but it happened. Indeed, Max McGee, hero of the first Super Bowl, spent his night bar hopping with two local women. Was hung over the next day, left his helmet at the hotel. When the regular WR was hurt, he was called upon. He had to borrow another player's helmet to enter the game.
