not even that...

If Heupel doesn't pursue another QB, I take that as him letting Nico know that he has full confidence in him.

I see your point but I would take it as Heup showing confidence in Joe. If Joe struggles then Nico could start after the FL game, but not before.

I hope Milton gets his chance. He's paid his dues and did everything he could do as a team mate. He's gotta step it up and be a leader.

Not sure how it will end up, but sometimes it just don't work out.

Agree completely with Joe being a team player. However in 5 yrs of college ball he is a 56.7% career passer. Pretty low by today’s standards. And the fast paced offense requires completions to keep moving. It is very obvious the offense against SEC competition moves quite a bit slower with Joe vs HH. With Joe it will require an excellent run game to succeed.

Exactly.

He has Milton already. Right?
Nico is coming in.
He knows what Milton is. He also believes he can still develop him....BUT....if not.
He has what looks to be a generational talent at QB in Nico.

Numbers wise we'll be okay with 3 guys in the spring.

He's a good player, big loss for them.....some would say hopefully big gain for UT. Look what happened to the last ACC QB who transferred here from VA (insert eye emojis here)

The state of Virginia may provide Tennessee with another signal caller transfer.

Uh…yeah. This kid would be an immediate star at UT. Much better credentials than Hooker or Milton when they transferred in. And he also had good rushing numbers. Looks perfect for this offense. I hope UT gets him.

This guy would “never” fit in Heupel’s O.

Heupel values safety. Protect the ball, protect your possession. Keep your possessions = scores, give away possessions and that’s less chances for you to score and more for the opponent to score.

This kid had 1 good year 31 td’s with 10 int’s, still with too many int’s for Heupel’s system…….and in 3 other seasons he had 26 TD’s with 25 int’s.

Heupel might bring someone in; however it will be someone who values ball security.

For reference his QB’s TD’s and int’s
2018 - 29 & 7 (even here not where he would like but his starter went down)
2019 - 36 & 8
2020 - 32 & 4
2021 - 33 & 3
2022 - 35 & 3

Every coach in America values ball security. We have no idea what how the coaching staff may evaluate a transfer, or what they feel they may be able to help a kid improve on.

Naw! We better focus on shoring up our defense. We already got a howitzer, and rifles aplenty. We need to fortify our defensive parameter.
No we don’t. We have a QB that got benched after one game and a bunch of unproven backups. I hope Milton is a huge success but I wouldn’t bet money on him at this point.

Ahhh. We have Joe, Nico and Tayven already along with practice squad guys. I trust JH and staff!
Tayven got hurt on his 5th play and Milton could get hurt I think they need a experienced QB because Nico probably needs to sit and grow or he could get hurt.

I don’t know, I live in Charlottesville and work at UVA, he had one great year and tailed off. Lots of blame on Elliott for that, but BA’s confidence is shot. He’s a decent QB but would never make it in the pro’s, might fit Heup’s system though. He’s undersized and not really that quick, ok arm. Can throw the deep ball but also threw a lot of picks.

We shouldn't focus on shoring up and fortifying our defense? But go QB hunting despite having a stable of, an overabundance as it were?
It's funny how you ignored the primary focus on my post and went straight after Milton. But it's OK, you're not alone in committing that gaff. I've been known to jump on a laser-brained single-minded thing or two at the expense of what's really being said. The peril and pitfall of being only human, I suppose.

While I don’t disagree with you regarding Heupel valuing ball security, I think we also can assume most QBs end up with fewer INTs in his system, where he schemes receivers wide open all day and there just aren’t as many times you’re throwing into tight coverage. For reference, I think Hendon’s numbers at VT were a far cry from what he ended up with here.

Not sure why some here have a chubby for this guy.....7 TDs 12 ints... Yes I get a new coach. But Elliott was a pretty good OC. 21 was a fluke for BA.. His comp % went back down to similar to 2020..... obviously he struggle mightly in his 5th year of college football....yet Milton overthrows a few passes yet throws no ints and y'all exect him to be perfect a complete everypass...amazing

Don’t know about this kid / QB specifically

But my philosophy of portal recruiting is RECRUIT PROVEN ELITE HIGH 4* AND 5* ATHLETES / PERFORMERS REGARDLESS OF POSITION

Bc elite performers create winning team synergy and are game changers

ESPECIALLY at QB and DOUBLE ESPECIALLY given CJH is “the QB whisperer”

So if Heup sees an elite QB in the portal with NC potential we should grab him. Otherwise HARD PASS (pardon the pun)

More generally, both players AND fans are going to have to accept the idea in NIL college free agency that there are no more “protected players” and the point of bringing in new athletes is to upgrade the TEAM FIRST

Just my .02

2022 - 35 & 3

The year before transferring to Tennessee, Hooker threw 9 TDs and 5 INTs in 150 attempts. An INT every 30 attempts.

The year before transferring to UT, Milton threw 4 TDs and 4 INTs in 141 attempts. An INT every 35 attempts.

Armstrong, in 2021, threw 31 TDs and 10 INTs in 500 attempts. An INT every 50 attempts. In 2022, he threw 7 TDs and 12 INTs in 338 attempts. An INT every 28 attempts (barely worse than 2020 Hooker).

Much of what makes a QB throw more or less INTs has to do with the offensive system he’s in. Heupel’s offense simply doesn’t lead to many INTs. Armstrong had a better INT/attempt ratio than either Hooker or Milton pre-UT in his 2021 season under Mendenhall, then it got much worse under Elliot. Different offense.

The coach and the system matters. Armstrong has a ton of ability, which he’s shown, and would likely be a superstar under Heupel.
