Oregon signee questioned?

As many years as I have been following college football, I have never heard of NCAA teams paying for recruiting services. I have never heard a coach thank "acme recruiting" for landing them talent. Something is wrong and the AA will sniff it out! Bad news for those involved.

No, that's not true. Plenty of schools pay people for their recruiting services and they aren't boosters.

this is why the banned the AAU coaches in Basketball, they were being paid to steer kids to certain schools.....this guy is no recruiting service....he is an agent

yes they are. anyone being payed by the university is considered a booster by the ncaa. even a janitor. other recruiting services make damn well sure they don't interfere with recruits decisions.

It remains to be seen if the NCAA actually goes after them though, correct? It seems that NCAA justice is not blind.

My 2 cents..

I thought I had read and heard that a lot of the schools use some form of recruiting services. However, I thought those services provided, tapes, scouting, briefings etc of players BUT had no biased involvement with the players.

Wasn't there a story about one of these services in the book Meat Market and Orgeron getting mad at a service because they came in with tapes and film that he wasn't impressed with?

I think the real issue is the guys out of Texas appear to be street agents and not legit recruiting services. I'm not sure about hard evidence, but the circumstantial evidence looks fishy from the initial reports.

Back to the topic at hand...
It's highly possible that the NCAA was asking Thomas about his recruitment/visit to Oregon - particularly about the clothing he returned home with, and how USC handled it when he returned. (DAT's visit became common knowledge because a UO student ran to the message boards and posted about how he had just seen DAT in the bookstore buying a pile of gear.) Meanwhile once he got back ESPN ran a few segments in which they suggested that USC boosters and coaches were trying to reach Thomas...

Forget for a second that boosters aren't supposed to do that to begin with, and recall that it was actually a dead period.
