Oregon's Gimmick Offense Should Put Us On Notice

Stanford bulldozed Oregon and we got punched out by Oregon, Alabama right behind Stanford and Mizzou pushed us around as well. Let's face it, our OL is way overhyped. They don't give up many sacks but run blocking is still pathetic after 4 years.

Alabama vs damn near everybody and Stanford vs Oregon says hello to all you gimmick offense lovers.

The gimmick offense tries to just trick you or exploit mistakes. The power offense tries to impose its will and beat you down.

I caught some grief saying Alabama would grind Oregon to dust in the BCSNCG. Won't have the opportunity now.

I prefer smash-mouth football. Watching Cheese run through the Arkansas defense after Stoerner's fumble is still the epitome of Tennessee football to me.

Having said that, the innovative offenses do seem to help teams with a natural recruiting disadvantage. However, if Butch keeps it up, he will show he is an elite recruiter a la Fulmer. In a few years we might be able to line up against Saban's Bama toe-to-toe.

Stanford's line had more to do with attitude than measureables. They took it upon themselves to dominate and take the will out of Oregon.

Too many of yall are stuck in the 90s. UT doesn't have the personnel to run a "traditional" offense. Most importantly a group of stud running backs. I like Lane and Neal, but neither of them are on the level of the RBs that you need to run that type of offense that's straight up power.

Here's a wierd thought. Why can't we do both? Why can't we recruit for both. We could have 2 back sets, 3-5 WR, 2-3 TE jumbo sets and I formations and the read option/option/FB Dive or spread. On one of the 4th down plays in the Georgia game, Worley hit Bransiel on circle route out of the back field, I think that is the type of style BJ is looking for. One minute you are throwing it to the FB out of the back field the next that FB is running over the MLB to open a hole for the RB. Think about this if we have 3 good TE that can block and catch, 6-8 WR that can block and catch with blazing speed and 2-3 FB and 2-3 RB that are dominant, strong forceful runners can you think of the possibilities. The reason Oregon couldn't win this game is they didn't have a bruising back that could get them the hard 3-4 yards when they needed them. Stanford did! How many times have we heard BJ say "get those 3-4 hard yards" this year.

Yep. Stanford's O-line pushed them around. I was also impressed with Stanford's D-line. Created pressure on Mariota and let the LBs make plays.

The O Line might be best in the nation. I'm not ready to crown them, but they are good. It's pretty easy to defend a one dimensional offense. The line can only do so much. Then it becomes necessary for a wide receiver to catch a ball delivered by a quarterback. Or maybe it's time for a running back to hit the proper gap and even (SHOCK AND AWE) make a linebacker miss. The overall talent level of the offense (and defense for that matter) is not bad but there is very little experienced talent except on the offensive line. They can only do their part and in watching them, it seems that they are doing a good job of it.

Let the "best O-line in the Nation" thing go man. The O-line obviously is not the "best" but our O-line is very very good.

It gets annoying that people keep calling them out when that's the best part of this team. So what if they said they were the best? Next time they should just say they're the worst and maybe we wont call them out so much? This isn't towards anyone particular but if the shoe fits....you know what to do.

I think since we're pretty bad all around atm we take it out on the one thing we all know is good when they don't play to the "best O-line in the country" standard.

I try to focus on the real reasons. Who's to say if we had the talent like say Oregon had we wouldn't be the best in the country?

I just wish we would lay off them.

JMO though:good!:

Good post. I love an offense that will mix it up and be un predictable. Too many times this year we have been too predictable. To give benefit of the doubt, maybe it's having to play so many very young skill position guys on the O this season, causing us to have to simplify what we could call.

I believe Oregon's offense will always be successful if they continue to recruit the kind of athletes that they have. If teams play technically sound assignment football and be the more physical team against Oregon, that is where they always struggle. Smash mouth football vs finesse is a push in my opinion, but Oregon won't beat a team that is more physical at the point of attack.

Florida did not run the read option. The plays were called before they broke the huddle.Posted via VolNation Mobile

This is like saying....

....

...well, it's like saying something that really doesn't make any sense.

The read option allows the qb to decide whether to hand the ball off when the ball is snapped. Tebow never did that.
