Our DB's are going to have to learn to look back

Yes and no. DBs are taught to play the WRs hands/eyes if they’re in the trail position when the ball is arriving. If they’re in good position and have the WR covered up, they’re taught to turn around and find the ball, as Hadden did on the pick.

Hadden’s problem is that he doesn’t seem to trust his coverage and doesn’t turn around when he’s NOT in a trail position, but rather, has tight coverage. That happened on both PIs. Not sure how long they’re going to let him keep doing this before replacing him, because, if I’m Florida on 3rd or 4th down, I’m just throwing it up at Hadden and drawing PI. I’d play Jeudy-Lally at this point.
Hadden seems to be pretty talented though. Frustrating to watch at times but then out of nowhere he makes a great play! Has Jeudy-Lally been out there much yet? Saw him out there on Saturday later in the game for the first time. Don’t recall seeing his name before that.

In the NFL.you have to look back or it's pass interference. In college and high school you don't have to look back. DBs are now taught to put their hands up when the WR goes into a catching motion with his arms, to try and knock the ball away.
You have to look back in college too.

I think when you say DBs need to get their head around, you just mean Hadden. It's always him. Slaughter has done well (he had the one bust, but that was just a good play call). Honestly, Burrell has looked good when he's gotten action this year at least. TMac has been much improved as well (though I'm sure most will consider him to be a safety). Hadden did have the INT, and a nice pass breakup, but two penalties and would've given up a big plan on one of the trick plays if the pass was better. He's not good.

You don't. Face guarding is legal as long as you aren't making contact. All across football (I was wrong about the NFL) no pass interference rules mention looking back or turning back towards the ball. All note that physical contact beyond the neutral zone with intent to impede an eligible receiver who has the opportunity to catch a forward pass is required to cause pass interference.

We're getting too many penalties from our DB guys. This will come back to haunt us.
Martinez doesn't teach looking back. I've lived in Georgia most of my adult life and their fans used to complain about that ad nauseam when he coached for them (which not so coincidentally was when Ainge and Crompton lit them up). Martinez is a face guarding guy.

I was pretty sure you were going to respond this way. I don't care what the rules say. It is optics. Refs call penalties based on optics. If there is any doubt about PI and you are not looking back for the ball, you will get flagged in college all day. You get zero benefit of the doubt.

They were also underthrows that forced the WR to come back so also just kind of lucky for AP too

Has Martinez ever coached a top notch defensive back end?
I mean he did get promoted several times at Georgia and was there DC at one point. So I would think they were happy at some point there. He has put several guys in the league. I would argue he has a good eye for talent, is a decent recruiter as well, just struggles to get the most out of the position. Now whether that’s scheme based or specific technique based is arguable.

Martinez is not a good DB coach, never has been. Not sure how he keeps getting jobs.. Hadden has poor technique and he's been around long enough not play that way..
I have said the same thing and always get called a troll by certain posters. One poster says that the players love Willie and so do recruits. And oh he has put dudes in the NFL. I mean the guy has been coaching for 30+ years. I would expect even a semi decent DB coach to put guys in the NFL over that span.

It’s funny. For the past two years we have been seeing the same things out of the CBs. They are not doing the routine fundamental things that CBs do. So at what point do we say if we see something over and over again we don’t question the coaching?

I think Willie Martinez is one of the main reasons we didn’t make the CFP last year. I mean Spencer Rattler made our CBs look like pee wee football players. And that’s coaching. But then you will see people say well he doesn’t have any talent at CB. So teams like Charolette, Bowling Green, Akron, Georgia State, North Texas and western Kentucky have recruited better DB talent than us? BS! It’s coaching and Martinez sucks.

Very few of those. The WRs had more drops than Joe had bad throws. If two of the drops were caught nobody would be talking about Joes stats.

Heck at this point I’d settle for a mirror like those used on bicycle helmets! At least know where the ball has been thrown

Usually you learn what you're taught. Do we know what Martinez teaches? What's his philosophy? Maybe Hadden and the other DBs are doing exactly what the coaching staff wants them to do.

Rule number 1 is don’t let the WR get behind you. Then play the ball not the receiver.

Hadden does the exact opposite of this. He literally lets the WR make a move, gets behind the receiver, and then never looks for the ball. It’s maddening

My theory on this one is : Our DBs are not fast enough and are bad. Turning head would lead them getting burned bad by the receiver so Martinez teaches them to focus on WR instead.

I know it sounds bad but I can't come up with any other explanation on why Martinez's DBs never turn head. It happened even during the Butch Era.
I agree. When the receivers don’t turn around it’s usually because they are struggling to keep up with the receiver. I’m willing to give Martinez the benefit of the doubt. We have better players on the way.

DBs are supposed to play the receiver in Man 2 Man coverage. In zone the DB plays the ball. It’s simple football 101. Zone coverage has more picks but also more receptions. Man 2 man has fewer picks, fewer receptions but typically longer receptions.
