Overrated Bands

The couple Whiskeytown shows I saw where lots of fun. Ryan and the Cardinals were hit or miss live, and sometimes, a complete disaster. Ryan has a rare talent, but he's also got a rare talent at being a prick. He's better now.

Ryan reminds me of Tweedy in so many ways. Watching both of them come up was interesting. Tweedy grew up and has really turned into a showman and is a master at his craft. Ryan is coming of age but still all over the place in his head. Fun seeing him when things are going well.

RA is talented. 75% of what he puts out, though, is pretty much garbage.

This is obviously just my opinion. I have a friend that really likes RA. And maybe I would like RA if he had something resembling an internal filter. Or maybe he just needs an editor.

Worse than Ryan? He's pretty mellow nowadays.

I probably should have said "was" instead of "is" a jackass. He may be exactly the same or he may have mellowed, as our good Dr. RosenRosen suggested, but he most definitely was. I've never been a Wilco fan so I don't keep up with him much anymore but the accusations behind the Uncle Tupelo split were enough for me. Needless to say I became a Farrar guy after that.

I've seen him four times. Three of the best shows I've ever seen and one of the worst. His last few albums have been forgettable at best. Nothing since Jacksonville City Lights has really been worth the purchase.

I agree. I stopped listening to him because I was tired of wading through the crap to find the good stuff.

Wilco today is a genius. Nels is awesome live and brings a great sound and energy to live shows. Bennett was a genius, but a prick, and Wilco didn't have room for 2 of those guys.

I was on the Farrar train when UT broke up. His first album was great. Some of his songs are my favorites from UT. But, Farrar just wasn't for me after that. He quit 'rocking.' His approach and direction after that was just too mellow for me. I'd rather have 'Graveyard Shift' Jay than 'Wide Swing Tremolo' Jay.

I'm not familiar with the reasons UT split. I've always heard it was Tweedy and Farrar trying to take control and they finally got sick of each of each other.

Wilco has put out plenty of good music the last 10 years.

I have everything Wilco has ever released I just prefer the old stuff. Sky Blue Sky and (the Album) didnt do too much for me outside of a few songs. They were not horrible and I still enjoy them but I don't like them nearly as much as Summerteeth and YHF.

I've always thought Nels was underutilized or maybe it just seems that way since they have kinda gone back to there roots. I don't care so much about the live show. As a listener, I'd rather have a great album and a sub-par live show than a great live show and a sub-par album.

You're basically right about the UT split. It was ego and immaturity on both sides.

Not a huge fan of Sky Blue Sky, but YHF is in the last ten years.

My biggest beef with Wilco is the last 30 or so seconds of "I am trying to break your heart". I value artistic freedom as much as the next guy -- and it's their song, so they can do with it what they want -- but I personally think that a song that amazing (and I LOVE that song) deserves a slightly more graceful send-off.

I'm quite the opposite. I like live music and seeing something different every show. An album is just another version of the songs you love. Seeing a great band live is a fun time. The energy created at that point in time is what I love about music.

Obviously nothing wrong with either appreciation. The last 2 Wilco records aren't my favorite, but there's gems on both. Bull Black Nova is just incredible live when Nels is going off and rocking like a madman.

You seen Nels live (and hopefully you have)? I do think he could be bigger on the albums. He's just an animal live and everyone in the house feeds off him.

They have several songs that just trail off with horrible off key tones for a good 60 seconds. It's annoying.

I agree that there is nothing quite like a live show and I did see Wilco at the Ryman, I think it was at the end of 08. I love live music and try to go to as many concerts as I can. But a live show is only one night and an album I will be able to listen too for the rest of my life. I totally agree will the last 2 Wilco albums, there not great but there are some gems.

All I listen to is live music for the most part. There's some albums I love as an album, but for the most part, I'm the sort of guy that just pulls up a random show from bands I like and plays that while I'm working or doing whatever.

Keep rocking out supporting live music. I think concerts are a way of life and always have. Even now that I'm the 'old guy in the club,' I'm still going to see the music I like. I encourage all to do the same. Good to see you like concerts.

This was what I was referring to:

In a recent interview with Relix magazine, Jay Farrar laid the blame for the demise of Uncle Tupelo squarely on Tweedy, accusing him of making a pass at Farrar's girlfriend (now his wife), Monica Groth, in the back of the group's van while on tour in 1992. Farrar says he quit the band immediately and reluctantly rejoined. He left for good in 1994 during a confrontation where Farrar says Tweedy began "bullying" him. "His response was to call me a 'pussy,' and he continued to call me that over and over," Farrar told Relix.

I know there are always two sides to every story and things are probably remembered differently from Tweedy's perspective, but I've heard from a couple of people who probably have a good idea about these things that this is a fairly accurate portrayal of how things went down.
