'17 PA CB Lamont Wade

"He is scheduled to visit. I think right now, Tennessee and Penn State seem to be kind of at the top. Ohio State could be in there, but they are on some other big time corners as well."

I get this guy confused with Jamyst Williams all the time. They have the same haircut, are the same height, and have the exact same rating on 247 composite.

In b4 that's racist

I know there are several guys here who don't think he is elite. That's cool, I respect that opinion. I like his tape a lot though. Smooth hips, good speed, nose for the ball, tackles well and doesn't mind hitting somebody. I'd love to add him to this class. Our secondary has potential to be DISGUSTING if we get these guys in. Come be a Vol!

I still he think he is a great player, even elite. but not 5 star. Top 100 definitely but top 30 I don't see right now. jmduo (just my dumb uniformed opinion)

Pure speculation here but I think we end up getting Wade. I don't see PSU having a good year and Franklin has worn out his welcome in Not So Happy Valley. OSU appears to have higher rated targets or lost momentum and their camp leaked that to save face. Wade plans to EE so luckily his recruitment shouldn't be a circus.

*As a random and meaningless aside, I don't think PSU has a huge drop off in results on the defensive side of the ball in 2016. Their DL coach under Shoop was destined to become a coordinator. Shoop's departure just may have hastened that happening. I think his replacement will prove to be a young star as a DC. That said, taking Shoop was the biggest coordinator addition for us since Cut came back in 2006 IMO. But this just goes to show how much talent Shoop had under him as a DC. His LB coach at PSU was tops in the biz too (of course, PSU is known as "Linebacker U"). I hope our position coaches are as talented. Shoop publicly stated how impressed he was with each during the interview process.

Wade is a physical corner that plays better with pads on. I think he ends up as a NB if he were to choose UT.

His camp vids against WR's hasn't been that great relative to other CB's. He's not a lock down island CB from what I've seen.

Here is a vid from the 5 star challenge. If you want to see what a 5* man to man cover corner looks like.... watch AJ Blades in the video.

Agree with this 100% (both in the Wade assessment and Blades). I watched the video with my father and said that Blades as only a rising junior was easily the best DB on the field that I saw. He's got an exceptional future.

My dad then pointed out how good the Blades brothers were at Miami in the mid-80s. He then added that we spanked their a$$e$ in the sugar bowl, which led to me watching for the first time the entire game on YouTube (I was only one at the time).

It's a shame we only had Ken Donahue as a DC for a few years before he retired. He was from just outside of Knoxville originally and played during the pinnacle of UT football under Neyland (1947-1950 -- just missed the NC in 1951). Donahue was likely a very, very big reason for Bear Bryant's success at Bama (coached their from 1964-1984). Our D in the '86 Sugar Bowl was unbelievable. The previous game, Miami hung 58 on Notre Dame (last game of the regular season), yet they never got into a rhythm against us. It's also impressive how few mistakes/turnovers that team made. Dickey was exceptional as a redshirt senior. It's amazing to think that he would never have played had it not been for Tony Robinson's injury. Tangent, I know.

Wade may be the worst looking DB on that video. His footwork isn't near where it needs to be for his size. If we don't get him I'm fine with it. 😎

You can tell Blades has been playing DB all his life. He doesn't go for anything. Plays like a veteran all the way around. Going to be a star at Miami.

He said he’s currently scheduled to visit Penn State, Ohio State, Tennessee, Georgia and UCLA in the coming weeks. He said he’s planning to return to Tennessee “next week” on a trip that also will take him to Georgia.

“I think I’m going back down there (to Tennessee) next week, because I’m going to Georgia and I’m going to Tennessee, too.”

The 5-foot-9, 185-pound Wade has been to Tennessee just once, having attended the Vols’ home game against Georgia last season. But they have stayed in frequent contact with him in recent months, and he said he’s eager to make the trip to Tennessee again.

“I talk to (defensive coordinator Bob) Shoop a lot,” Wade said. “I talk to (head) coach (Butch) Jones a lot, too, (and defensive backs) coach (Willie) Martinez, (associate director of player personnel Matt) Wilson. There’s a bunch of coaches down there, also, so I have a real connection with them.

“The environment down there is crazy. I feel like I’d fit in a lot down there in that locker room at Tennessee, and I just really like it a lot.”
