I would move to the DC area in a heartbeat, just don't think I could deal with the traffic over a long period of time.
DC or BPV...Are there surrounding communities that you would suggest that wouldn't be too far of a drive with traffic, or is Reston pretty good? The job would be a short term deal, no more than 3 or 4 years. I don't think I would want to buy, and not sure I could afford what I would want anyway.
Housing: Fair warning. For a decent apartment/townhouse you should fully expect $2k/month + for a good place. It does depend on what you want, however. Anywhere in NoVa is pretty damned nice. Herndon, Ashburn, Chantilly or Reston are all really really nice areas.
Traffic: Out that way it isn't too bad, to be honest. It's faaaaar worse on the beltway (and you're a good distance from that). Leesburg Pike (7) and Fairfax County Parkway (7100) have all moved along very briskly every time I've gone out there.
There is a lot to do around there (as I'm sure you know) and it's almost all fairly new developments... which, combined with being one of the wealthiest areas in the US, makes things very expensive.
Thanks for the info.
The wife and kid will not come along initially, and the job will require me to be out of the country about half the year. So I was looking into renting rooms or basement apartments with short term or month to month leases while I am actually in Reston. Surprisingly, I have found on craigslist I can get a nice room or basement apartment for $1K or less, everything included, which is nice. All I really need is a roof over my head while I am in CONUS. I'm fine with doing that so I am not paying outrageous amounts to keep an apartment I won't be staying in half the year. When the family comes in a couple of years we will look into something more permanent. I hear right now housing, while still pretty expensive, is as cheap as it has been in a long while.
The plan is to do that for a couple of years and stay if we like it. I have a feeling the traffic and cost of living is going to wear on me and I will want to move on.
Being a "geobachelor" is going to be much easier on you than up there with your family. An easy thing to do would probably be to go into the Pentagon (if you have a CTR badge) and see what houses are being sublet. You'll either share a house/apt with a government/military occupant with a steady salary and most of the time the prices are more than fair. Also, with deployments/training you can probably find some good temporary places without being dragged into a lease.
