Patriots fire Mayo

They drafted Maye. They aren’t taking Sanderson any other QB. They really missed on the value of the first pick more than any player. That roster is awful and could have swapped the first pick down to a fourth or fifth and gotten another first or second for the movr
My comment is in response to the remark about a Samders package.

They heard Vrabel was interviewing elsewhere and felt the need to pull the trigger quickly

I think this is 100% spot on, especially because it's the Jets who he was interviewing with. They can't let the rival hire their favorite guy. It'd be like Eddie George going to coach the Colts. Mayo got screwed because of it but hopefully he has a really nice buyout.

Right. Helps the titans too bc once Vrabel gets hired, they are off the hook for his buyout. More money to buyout Callahan now lol

What are the chances they fired him for winning and missing out on the #1 pick?
There was no way the Patriots were going to do anything meaningful this year with the roster they had. So no way Mayo could look good. This was all part of the Krafts master plan. Stick in a placeholder for a year then hire your popular alumnus.

Don't understand the point of promoting a guy to his 1st year as HC then when it's a bad year (after finishing exactly the same with Belicheck) you can him. Looking forward to the Pats sucking.
It was a PR move.. They knew no one was gonna come in and 'replace' Belichick. So they used Mayo as the gap guy. Now they can have someone come and 'replace' Mayo. Can't blame him for taking the opportunity but he knew what he was up against. I am glad he gave Milton a start on his way out.

also folks in the NFL know whats up and aren't liking it either

I can't blame the Pats for moving on from Mayo when Vrabel is available. I don't blame Mayo for the poor season, but he did operate outside the norm and people are gonna always freak out over that if you aren't winning.

I love Bill Simmons because he's built a cool media empire and he has pretty solid show, but his fandom is intolerable sometimes. He hammered the Pats under on wins total, and then spent the whole year losing his mind about Mayo. It was so obnoxious. You can't be mad at the coach every week when you expected to lose not knowing anything about the coach. And last week he was pre-emptively freaking out about the possibility of losing their #1 pick, which they would have undoubtedly traded back for much-needed assets. The fact that Milton, another Vol, is the one who led the Pats to victory is just a chef's kiss.

Tuning into Bill's show now to hear the meltdown.

There is 0% chance Kraft didn't think he was hiring a good coach. He announced his intentions about Mayo's future like way back in 2019. You wouldn't do that for a gap guy.

I don't understand firing after 1 seasons. 2 seasons if there's no improvement, ok....but 1?
Patriots seem to want Vrabel and afraid he’ll be snapped up by someone. That Pats roster is a joke, Mayo deserved better. I hope he’s not to be a Pat or Titan or Cowboy, so I can root for his success.

Nothing against him, but I don't think Shedeur is a first round talent...maybe late first. Cam may be the only "take" at QB early in the draft, imo.
I'm not sure sure there is a sure fire great 1st round QB this year.
Not sure Shedeur or Cam is going to be great in the NFL.

It is obvious he was the scapegoat here.. There is 100% chance. They are mad he started Milton and didn't tank that last game. Dropped them from first pick to 4th. Now they will put in their guy who can come in with 0 expectations and 'clean up' Mayos mistakes. He was handed an impossible dumpster fire. He was never expected to succeed. Kraft has always been a lying, 2 faced, backstabbing POS this is par for the course.

He was handed a bad roster and impossible job (in terms of expectations of success) but then he did nothing to win anybody over at all.

Kraft fired Belichek, found his QB, faced an easier schedule, and then ended up with the same record as he had with Belicheck (only because the Bills handed them that last victory). Kraft is so insecure about Belicheck, there is no way he's not freaking out about this season.

If they get Vrabel, then firing Mayo was the right move, I'm sorry to say. It's not "fair" to Mayo, but you gotta do for your franchise.
