Paul Chryst fired at Wisconsin

I could see Nick Saban retiring if Alabama loses the SECCG again. I think Alabama will be upset by Ole Miss and lose to Georgia in the SECCG missing the Playoffs and winding up in the Cotton Bowl,Sugar Bowl or Orange Bowl with an 11-2 record.

I don’t know what to think about Saban retiring. I feel like he’d want to have the program in really good shape for the next guy, and I also think he’d want to go out on top. I don’t know who the next guy might be. Bama may have to go outside the Saban coaching tree to find their guy . All that said, I would fully support Nick Saban and his retirement in 2023.

I somehow think his successor might be Dabo Swinney or Kirby Smart

I've changed my tune on Saban's retirement over the years. In the early/mid 2010s, I thought he was way too smart to coach until he died or hang around too long and let the program falter. He has the look now of one of these guys that if he stopped coaching, he'd have no idea what to do with his time, and that's why he keeps coaching.

This is one of the most questionable firings of the past decade.

Wisconsin is just the new Nebraska. They do not have strong recruiting territory and have greatly outperformed in the past few decades relative to what should be expected of them. Chryst was 67-26. They've not been very good this year, but they could very easily hire a worse coach than Chryst. Very similar to Nebraska firing Solich.

I don’t know why Kirby would leave his alma mater and everything he’s built to go to Bama.
No shot. Only way he leaves for another college job is if UGA years down the road falls for the thing that us and Michigan did. After finally breaking long championship droughts and have success surrounding those years. Expectations get enormous and after fall off goes elsewhere that would love the 9 wins he brings at that time. schools like Bama would not be on the shoppers list though. No way they would take a guy who had fallen off at Georgia and say come finish here. They will be looking for the hottest on the market at the time. And zero chance like you mentioned that if Saban left in next couple years that Kirby would leave his circumstances and alma mater.

I don't see either one leaving for Bama. You don't want to be the man that replaces the man.
Whoever replaces Saban is a guy who currently is not on anybody's radar screen.

Kirby has absolutely no reason (financial, sentimental, or otherwise) to go there. Dabo I suppose has a sentimental reason, but that is it. Neither at this point have financial reasons to leave.

I think Dabo would totally go to Alabama if he hadn't won a national title(s) and didn't walk on water at Clemson. Kirby, even if he hadn't won a title at UGA, I think would stay put because he's home and the pay was comparable, even before his raise.

All I can say is that I'm damned thankful that UT isn't on this firing/hiring roller coaster anymore. Glad we've finally gotten some sanity and stability back into our program. Sick of firing folks.
Agreed, but the environment can change so quickly.

Wisconsin historically is a very buttoned-up, conservative program. Both in terms of their style of play and how the athletic department is run. For them to have a quick trigger finger as far as firing a HC shows just how cutthroat this business is, especially in a world of the early signing period, the portal, and NIL. It seems like coaches are allowed to have one, maybe 2 bad seasons before their job is seriously in jeopardy.

Chryst went 10-4 with a one-point loss in the Rose Bowl in 2019, and played for the Big Ten title. Three of his other four seasons at the school also had double-digit wins, including winning 2 NY6 bowls and appearing in 2 Big Ten title games, both of which were close games.

He then has a mediocre COVID year, goes 9-4 (6-2) last season, then is canned after a 2-3 start to this season. The only thing truly bad about his post-2019 performance was the start to this season. It's a pretty quick hook, especially for Wisconsin. I'm not even sure Tennessee today would fire a coach that quickly, especially if he appeared in 3 SECCGs and won multiple NY6 bowls over the preceding 7 seasons. We would have (and did) in 2008, but probably not today.

I don't see Texas opening up yet and the other schools you listed won't have the same candidates as the likes of Wisconsin,Nebraska and Auburn.

I saw where Auburn wants to make a run at Prime Time

The only reason I could see Dabo leaving for Bama would be if Clemson gets stuck in the ACC for the long haul and they fall behind bc they can’t compete w/ recruits going to the SEC and BIG.

Perhaps, but the big powers in the ACC/Pac 12/Big 12 will be OK and find a home.

It is the non-premier programs in those conferences (Virginia Tech, Oklahoma St, Utah, etc.) who should really be concerned.

Dabo has every reason to leave Clemson.

He’s pretty much accomplished everything there that other formal coaches haven’t done.

He’s a graduate from the University of Alabama, formal player, and has family ties in that state.

I hope it doesn’t happen but I can’t see Bama boosters going the cheap route after Saban retires.
