Pearl Offer From Memphis

If he wants to eventually land a "big name" job, I say Tennessee is his best bet. The way he's picked this program up makes him look like a genius coach. If he can just get us to an elite 8 or even a final 4...he'd look like the hottest coach in the country. At Memphis, he's got to get that far every year or else it will look like the program has declined under his leadership. I imagine that Memphis isn't where he wants to end up with his career. If that's true, then he probably only hurt his stock with taking a job like Memphis...of course, unless he wins a NC.

I'm not sure why Pearl would leave unless he is scared and that does not fit his personality. Coaches like having challenges, and with Donovan and Calipari in the SEC East now he has got some good competition.

Anyone else think Pearl could be milking this a little to get some fans to coddle him a little after this past season?

Maybe, but let me ask you this - if someone offered to increase your salary by over $1M/year, would you express some interest? I would.

Yep, that's why I have played basketball my whole life on actual teams. So you are saying they came out flat against Memphis last year? Florida both times this year? At south Carolina? Marquette? You obviously look at the negatives more than the positives. This is 18 to 21 year old kids. Sometimes they have a mind of their own. Plus wayne had a broken thumb against ok state. Do you know how hard it is to play down low with a broken finger? It can get physical. If you want him gone then ok. You might just get your wish. I bet you weren't complaining about pearl his first 3 years here. This was by far his youngest team and they have tons of potential.

Good for you for playing basketball all your life, does that make you know more about than anybody? They played pretty well but just this year and last they have came out flat and gotten ran out of the building my much lesser teams, this year it was, Temple, Ole Miss, Kentucky, Alabama, and Mississippi State. All these teams they had more talent than and just got outcoached. As for Wayne having a broken thumb affecting him being physical down low, that is comical. When has he been physical, he wants to shoot the three, the broken thumb just gave him an excuse to fire up 8 or 9 three's like he did. Pearl has done alot here, but with the facilities we have and how nice TBA is, whoever comes in next can and will win.

It's all about leverage.

I think if you want UT fans to coddle you a little more, you flirt with the Arizona job or job in the Midwest. Not a potential job that is within your own state, conference, or region. Pearl may get some leverage out of this within the University but I am not so sure that fans won't have this in the back of their minds when judging him in the future. Memphis is cutting it a little close for the fans.

I think you are exactly right.

The University of Tennessee is flatly denying that men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl has been offered a job to coach at Memphis.

Tiffany Carpenter, Public Relations Director for the UT Athletic Department, told 10 Sports that Pearl had not received any offer.

She also said Pearl is in Detroit today, giving an award to Louisville Coach Rick Pitino.

Again, the University of Tennessee is denying reports that Bruce Pearl has been offered a 7-year, $21-million deal to coach at Memphis.

The University of Memphis would have to ask UT's permission to talk to a coach under contract.

WMC in Memphis is reporting University of Tennessee men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl was offered a 7-year, $21-million deal to coach there.

The University of Memphis recently lost its coach to the University of Kentucky. John Calipari signed a $4-million-a-year contract to coach the Wildcats.

Sources tell WMC that Pearl has been offered a deal and that he has expressed interest.

Tennessee cannot replace Bruce Pearl. The energy and excitement that he brings to our program is unique. The character and charisma the guy displays both on and off the court is what spurs the excitement. Nobody can tell me Nova or Butlers coach could have the same affect.

I realize it should come down to x's and o's but lets be realistic. Pearl's attitude and personality are contagious. UT has always been a football school and we would be kidding ourselves to think that just any good coach could recruit and have the effect on a fan base that Pearl has brought to Knoxville. He has brought more excitement to the basketball program than we have ever seen in two lifetimes. We are now on the map! Without him we fall back into mediocrity. Please keep bleeding orange Bruce! UT.......pay him whatever it takes because he is the reason the bb team is finally making a profit and causing excitement among the Tennessee faithful.

I do agree you have to keep him here because he has done something no one else could do and that is sell out the arena for a men's event and on a regular basis...he has brought basketball back at the university and we need to try and keep him but in no way does that mean give him $3 mil...This could get ugly!
