Pearl urges Vols Fans to Back Martin

Yeah, bsing about some recruits at a bbq they shouldn't have been at and then lying about it pales under the Sandusky glare.

It's all just talk now. He should have told the truth. If he gets a second chance and screws up again, Bruce is an idiot. Fun to watch it play out.

They can't fire gonzo fast enough for me. Get it done ASAP and go straight in the Ray Mears room and introduce CBP as the new head coach, NCAA be damned!

This feels like a reverse psychology ploy. With Bruce saying those things it only fuels the fire and increases the murmur around Zo's firing and Bruce's return.

You'd think Haslam, Cheek and Pearl, who've known each other for quite some time and clearly have remained in contact, have just got to have had a poignant discussion regarding all this soap opera. If Pearl felt he'd be somewhere other than Knoxville to continue his career, he'd be conducting the exit strategy of "why ask someone who couldn't care less?". Instead he's saying all the right things for a coach-in-waiting........waiting for the axe to fall on CCM and his already agreed upon contract. 'Just a casual extrapolation of presented evidence.

Reading this made me feel like a kid on Christmas morning.

Dammit, I'm starting to believe this is actually going to happen.

I'll be honest, I think this makes Pearl look bad. The choice of attire and his choice of language makes it obvious he's trolling for the job. My question is why? He can tell the people that need to know he wants to come back without these types of stunts-this seems like a cheap way to play it.

To get the fans behind it even more.

Other than the BBQ and lying about it, what, if anything, else did Bruce do to hurt TN? I hope Hart turns down an NIT invite, fires CCM, and hires Bruce soon afterwards.

Yeah, but he would not have been able to land Aaron Craft and that other 5* guard. Oh, wait. Daaang.
Josh Selby was there. He only played one year at Kansas. Does anyone agree with me that the pic of Craft at Pearl's house with Shay's wife in the background (or was it Forbes wife?) doesn't surface if we hadn't beaten Ohio State in the 2010 Sweet 16? Matta knew we were under investigation and probed the Craft's for dirt and his dad obliged. That is not to excuse Bruce for lying of course.

As soon as chrome dome folds in the first round of the NIT... and Mr whisper is cut loose... when's the soonest possible time that we can rehire Bruce Pearl???

The second he was fired. That would require going to the NCAA though. If Pearl is hired back, you wouldn't hear anything official until his show cause is up. But unofficially, soon. Martin would be canned around late March, early April and if Pearl were coming back, wed likely be coachless for 5 months or so. That still wouldn't prevent Pearl from hiring a staff, UT putting them on the payroll to run the team. Would that be a first? A staff being hired before a coach? This is a unique situation so possible. I don't see UT keeping Martin right up until Bruce is allowed to be hired back

Also, I've always wondered about the so called "bump" at Oak Hill in the recruitment of Jordan Adams. That was total BS and the NCAA COI put that in it's notice to Tenn to try and embarrass UT enough to force Pearl out. That BS never came up in the hearing in June of 2011 because there was not one shred of proof to support that Pearl had done anything wrong. Let's not forget that Bruce had some people out to get him for whatever reason - including Mike Slive who was once an attorney for Illinois during the Deon Thomas scandal...I just wonder who called the NCAA over that? We should have stood up for our coach. That 8 game suspension in the SEC and off campus recruiting suspension was sufficient punishment.

Why would Slive hate Pearl? There was a stronger SEC team with Pearl coaching. That makes no sense from a business standpoint

I don't think Slive had it in for Tennessee but he does have a history with Pearl and as has been discussed in this forum many times Frank Haith received no such in conference suspension or recruiting ban at all for transgressions much more egregious than lying over a cookout...I'm speculating of course, but the penalties administered to Pearl prior to his firing were sufficient for what he was guilty of. I don't think he deserved the show cause and I don't think he should have been fired and I am very suspicious over the motive behind that NCAA's reporting of that 'bump' which they didn't pursue once he was fired. The NCAA Committee on Infractions clearly wanted to see Pearl fired which really bothers me in hindsight.

He is at a sports fest in Nashville, TENNESSEE and he lives in Knoxville, TENNESSEE...he has been wearing orange and white for the past 3 years....he is coming to talk to over a thousand UT fans and he is still a UT fan....stop looking at the negative side of things....pessimism blows

Uh I'm not a pessimist, and I like Pearl fine. I'm ready for a coaching change. I just don't think he needs to be out openly campaigning for the job-I think it cheapens him and it can only cause problems for the guys that are actually representing TENNESSEE right now.

Pearl is not campaigning for the job and if you want to charge him with wearing orange contact your state representatives to make it illegal to wear orange, good luck. lol

Mark Howard on 104.5 this morning stated he believes yesterday Pearl was absolutely letting it be known he wants the UT job back.

Is that really keen insight though? Of course he wants his old job back. It made him rich and he screwed it up. It's the absolute best case scenario for him and he's gotten lucky enough to have the timing workout just right.

I don't think he'll get his job back and I would prefer we not rehire him, but I not think there's exactly a sales job involved with getting Bruce to apply for the job.

If you don't think Pearl is openly showing that he wants the job, then I don't know what to tell you. Again, if the admin wants to bring him back, fine.
I just wish he wouldn't make this more of a circus than it is already going to be. Some of you guys seem to forget, we have guys playing for UT right now, many of whom are finishing their careers and have only one shot left to make the tournament. Wouldn't it be nice if their own fans actually were spending their energy supporting that?
