Pearl's Already Gone: The Exit Strategy Hypothesis

that amazes me. It's like letting your CPA off the hook for lying to the IRS and then getting indignant when he gets a ticket for jay walking.

More like letting your CPA off the hook for lying to the IRS, him crying and saying he's a changed CPA, then getting caught claiming your dog as a dependent on your taxes.

When did anybody say we are going to be fine just because we are UT? We will be fine because we have enough money and the facilities to lure a good coach. Also, the people that think that UT was just a basketball wasteland before Pearl have absolutely no grasp of UT basketball history.

I think Pearl has as many ncaa tourney wins as UT had in the history of the program prior to him. Not a Pearl worshipper and won't be crushed when he's gone, but some arguments just don't hold as much water as others.

There are so many paths to attack this that it has literally rendered me unable to cover any of them.

There is no need to attack. Tenn. is not a basketball mecca. No big time coach will come to Tenn. The risks are to great. Now we might get lucky with a smaller school coach as we did with pearl. If He leaves we will have to hope we get lucky again.

Tenacious then please by all means name who it is you think this so called homerun is because you do seem hellbent on it being someone specific so please elaborate on the theory.

Don't pretend to know who it will be, but of the 3-4 they've targetted and who seem interested, an argument can be made that all are upgrades - with some being less debateable than others.

exit or not,if there is any possibility of loss of scolership or postseason ban if pearl is gone then keep him.dont get rid of the only coach that lead ut to six strait ncaa tournys.encluding a sweet sixteen and final eight.if he leaves and we still get penalties it would be crazy.if we get sanctionc either way he needs to stay .why get rid of a winning coach if we still get penalties.i for one have went to ut games since the late 70s and watched on tv or listened on radio since 74.and pearl has been a winner .were from devoe until werent

Bos, multiple people are saying its done. Signed, sealed done.

Hypothetically speaking, of course.

Let me add something else, some of you seem dead set on getting rid of Pearl no matter what the NCAA gives us. I don't understand that mentality. I don't see anybody out there that would take the UT job that can do as well as Pearl has at UT because we do not have a great basketball history to fall back on like Kentucky. The things he is doing right now have never been done at UT. Some of you are naive to think we are going to get another great coach and start winning again just because we are UT. You have no sense of Vol basketbal history.

AGREE 100 % !!!!!
Unlike the Indiana job a couple years ago (similar situation with coaches), Tennessee basket ball is NOT a destination job...Sorry guys, we just aren't to that sustained level yet.

Now, with that said, we need to find either
A) A "up and coming" coach from like a small D-1 school or
B) A coach who knows Tennessee and believes with his heart that UT is a destination job...

A) probable
B) Not sure there is anyone out there that fills the roll

I'm glad you aren't participating in the search.

Me too...I would suck at picking a new coach...but then again, I don't have an MBA and chair a multi-million dollar "company"...not that either of those qualify one for picking the best coach, but that is who is ultimately making the decision for us...

I agree, sort of. UT isn't regarded as a destination job, but we have the resources and the facilities to be a destination job.

A potential search would be your section "A" of up and coming coaches, but there is no reason UT couldn't land an established coach also.

Bruce Pearl has made this program much more attractive (despite the looming NCAA sanctions) than it has ever been. Ever.

Pipe Dreams
1. Rick Pitino
2. Jay Wright

Hopefuls
3. Bob Huggins (people think Pearl owns Cal...check this guy's record against him)
4. Mike Anderson

Other possibility
5. Tubby Smith (wouldn't really fire me up but we can certainly do worse)

None of those guys would even think about coming here.

This ghost coach that we are going to hire, Can he recruit better players than BP. In the overall scheme, I do not think that BP recruits have been in the top 150 in the country. Can he coach better than Pearl? Is he a better organizer? Can he coach and win against the elite bb programs in the country? If he fails to satisfy these question,he will not win and we will be back to 7000 in the bb arena. Based on the situation in this state, red botton lines in athletics will not cut it. BP has created a situation where UT is the 6-7 school in the country for attendance.

Who is saying this? Because Brent and Rob still are thinking he is going to stay.

If Bruce has agreed to step down, and UT has made contact through backchannels with potential coaches, is it wishful thinking to think that has something to do with Ark going with Tubby? (If that does happen). Just got me thinking that maybe Anderson turned down Ark for something else. Just a thought since we are on hypotheticals.

Why in the hell did Mike Slive suspend him for 8 games if he knew the NCAA would give a harsher penalty? If this is true then I'm going to be highly upset that the SEC runied this season for us knowing that Bruce would be gone at the end of the season anyway.

when Slive suspended him, it was not KNOWN that he would be gone. When the bump became known months after it occurred is when things fell apart for CBP. That was the final nail clsoing the coffin. Became a trust issue IMO.

Slive and Hamilton's inital penalties were to try and make NCAA penalty less. then the bump came to light later on.

So is this confirmed? I thought Hubbs has said recently that nothing has changed and that TN's plan is still to keep pearl even if he is suspended the entire 2011-12 season?

Who is the poster's source again?

Hamilton is trying to retain Pearl for obvious reasons, his own future.

Hubbs is also saying that more and more people that count are not on board..

From what I've heard, the Haslams' are on board. Pretty sure it doesn't matter after that.

So do you still think a settlement is done for his departure or do you think Hammy and others can still save Pearl's job?
