Depends on what front court players we recruit. As it stands right now I can see him getting some minutes

Looking at Pember this year, he needs about 5 years to physically mature. Sorry, but this kid was a reach. He wants to be a wing and he lacks the athleticism to do that. Doesn’t want to do the dirty work inside. He needs to move on.

Ehh..I wouldn't go that far. I do believe he received a little extra attention in the recruiting process because he was a local. But with that said the staff always knew he would take some time to physically mature.

Barnes had had multiple guys who seem to flip on switch in the course of an offseason and be a impactful contributor. Fulky, Pons, Jordan Bone, etc.

Plus, Pember gets a free year this year. He can still Redshirt another next. And by 2022/2023 season, if he isn't able to carve out a role he can transfer out abd still have two more eligible years.

I’m not sure about getting a 6th year with a future redshirt year. I suppose it’s possible, I just haven’t seen it published as an option. But 5th year redshirt seniors this year do get an option for a 6th.

Depends who sticks around. He has 3 more years and all of the 3s will be gone before his final season at UT.

True. Saw a little of this with Fulky, even though it was for a different reason. He got much better with time and with increased strength and weight.

Maybe, maybe not. Kid has the skills to contribute as an upperclassman. Of course he could transfer to a lower level school and be contributor immediately.
As you say, the kid has basketball skills and is savvy. Had 3 assists in the game Friday in 4 minutes. Excellent passer, very good hands, high basketball IQ.

Wasnt the same said about Fulky?

If he doesn't develop a low post game he will never see meaningful minutes.
I think he will have to be a 4-5 to get a lot of playing time. We seem to be getting outstanding talent at the 1-2-3 positions, plus we need him at the 4-5 positions. he should be a stud if he can put on 15-20 pounds of muscle and learns to be aggressive.

Agree. This guy is athletic enough with added muscle to be a solid 4/5 guy but probably doesn't have a D1 future at any other position.

He actually looked really good in his limited playing time against Tech. Threw a couple of really nice passes.

Every team has guys on the end of the bench. We are a top 10 team, so it’s even harder to break through.

Check back in a couple years.

Drew needs to shadow Fulky and learn to play inside. We didn’t see Fulky until year 4, and he blew up. I have faith if Drew puts in the work Barnes can develop him into a similar mold. How good he is will come down to how hard he works.

Two completely different players.

Well, we saw glimpses of Fulk in year 1 before his injury. He was the best freshman on the floor in a couple of those games, primarily Oregon, Chaminade, and GTech.

UNC as well iirc.

Last year Pember had that one drive down the middle of the lane versus Memphis with that massive slam that he didn’t finish. He was fouled and even though if he didn’t complete the dunk he showed that he wasn’t necessarily just a tall, finesse type of player. He flashed the makings of a beast. Unfortunately he mainly roamed the perimeter in most of his remaining minutes.

He will be a nice contributor his senior year. Maybe even junior. I think many forgot what he did against Memphis last year.

I almost included the UNC game, but felt Grant maybe outplayed Fulk in that one, overall, but yeah, he flashed in that game as well.

A weird stat, now that I look at it, but Fulk only played 5 minutes against Wisconsin in the 1st rd of the Maui Invitational with almost no dent in the box score (0 pts, 2 rebs), and then goes out the next day and plays 37 minutes vs Oregon and has 12 pts, 10 rebs, 2 assts, 2 stls, and 5 blks. Talk about a 24-hour turnaround.
