LG, I know these schedules are made way in advance, but what the heck was Florida thinking when they scheduled a SoCon patsy at such a critical time for ratings....
I think I read somewhere that Western Carolina was the last minute fill-in after the 12th game was added.
You'd still think they could do better than that, though.
The SEC should've required another conference game when the 12th game was added.
The answer to all three points is simple: $.
When the NCAA allowed the twelfth game, most of the big teams, like Florida, went looking for second tier opponents that could genertae an extra home game and generate the usual millions in revenue. Look at FSU, they added in Western Michigan.
This has always been a bone of contention for schools like Florida because Florida will not offer these schools a home-and-home deal, like we have with FSU or the SEC teams, i.e. in Gainesville one year, at the opponent the next.
This issue is why, for example, Florida would not schedule Miami. It was not some goofy fear issue (sorry hat, if you read this). It was all money driven. And in fact Florida has now reset Miami as a semi-regular opponent coming up in a few years.
In this particular case, when the 12th game was approved, the Florida athletic department emailed around to a long list of schools that are traditionally decent, but that are not so good that they will demand a return visit from the Gators (teams like Memphis or Montana or Marshall). That way, we get to keep our extra home game and the big $.
WCU took the deal and made $450,000 for their efforts. None of the other schools we typically rely on for such money maker games accepted, mainly because they had already accepted other offers. Florida was probably a little slow to get going on that, and it may have hurt us in the polls a little. But I think the pollsters who understand the system aren't all that bothered by it. We didn't move at all.
And in fact it gave the team a much needed breather, some time to heal, and gave some second, third, and fourth stringers some invaluable game situation experience.
So all in all it worked out. And I don't think it hurts us much in the end. With games at FSU and then thbe SECCG, there's plenty of time for Florida to impress (if it plays well in those games). And at the end of the day our SOS will still be among the best in the top BCS teams.
