Peterman Starting QB discussion

Starting peterman is more proof that UT coaches need to ignore the buzz in Knoxville and places like volnation. It's a shame the admin didn't key in on that fact in 2008. Less emotional reaction, more objective realism.

Great! This will go one of two ways.

1. He will play exceptionally well and win the game outright or keep it close.

2. He will get his ass handed to him in the swamp, loose any confidence that he may have had and flush his career down the toilet.

I have a bad feeling that it is going to be number 2. I just don't think the swamp is the place you want to start playing around with the QB position.

Let me make this clear. I do hope I am wrong in every sense of the way.

I see it working out like this: Peterman gets the start, throws at least one pick very early on, then has his ass handed to him and Worley coming in to finish out the game.

Gators 38 Vols 14

Not that far off

Hate to say it, but this one falls on CBJ. Starting an inexperienced QB in the Swamp? Brilliant gamble... that didn't pay off. Get Dobbs ready, please! Seen enough of Worley and Peterman forever!

So he's stupid for starting the redshirt freshmen and your solution is to start the true freshmen .

Ok

I was ok with the peterman start. I really thought next week would be a better time to make the switch. A true freshman with no prep in the swamp is just insanity.

I will never understand not getting the frosh some work against AP..

No, he should have started Worley. If he didn't do well then go to someone else. It was gamble he tried and it didn't work. Seen enough of that with the last regime.

Unless you're trying to save red shirts and buy time so you can get more of your system type guys in next year, the freshmen should have played in both wins.

Ok.
I reread your first post. You were making two different points in one post.
I'm caught up now.

Hindsight always 20:20. No way to predict how a new qb will react in a hostile environment until he experiences it. After the second offensive series, i couldn't understand why the coaching staff didn't go very basic and stick with a running game almost exclusively to protect Peterman.

I don't think anyone could have predicted how much damage Peterman, could've done in less than a half. The young man just isn't ready for SEC football. Worley is the best we have right now and they have to design and scheme around his abilities no matter how limited they are.

Point was would a frosh have done worse than Peterman.

I thought you were implying we should start a true freshman moving forward, or the poster you agreed with was. I think starting any freshman for the first time on the road against Florida is a bad idea. I would have probably brought Peterman in off the bench early, without going all in by naming him the starter. But at this point it's easy to play coach in hindsight.

If Butch thinks one of the true freshman gives us the best chance to win in November then, by all means, get him some live snaps. But I wouldn't name one the starter just because anyone has to be better than Worley. Because clearly, that's not the case. At the same time, I'm not kicking and screening if our two true freshman aren't ready to go by game four on the road.

He was hot garbage but we also have a fan base that is short sighted.

well, im near sighted. seriously, i need glasses to see as far as you into the future. peterman still played horrifically. worley played much better. its this staffs first season so im not expecting much. actually, TBH, i was pretty impressed by this teams tenacity, and by our defense as well. i dunno why the sky is falling all of the sudden

From a win loss standpoint I dont think it matters who starts or plays. I dont think we win this game if Worley starts. Peterman is pretty much done and the way I understand it there wasnt much seperation between him and Ferg. So moving forward Id say Worley is the lamb until Butch decides to look to the future. Og course and injury could force his hand.

this will not happen all of the sudden in the late fall. if Butch really sees something in one of the freshman, RS him. this year is a pass, new staff, new scheme. wait until you get your players in a little and the current roster can learn the system if u think someone has talent. no point in blowing a RS

I think that is reasonable going forward. I thought Butch had through the SAlabama game to find a QB. It isn't Butch's fault that Florida was a real winnable game this year......

No matter who the starter is, my only critique of the coaching staff is that they aren't doing enough to establish an offensive identity. Their best coaching half to date was the second half of the WKY game. I think that is a reasonable blueprint moving forward.

Of course, our QB situation is so bad, it makes it nearly impossible to tell exactly what the OC is trying to do.

For all the crap that Worley took after the Oregon game--and I fully get the fact that he is limited physically--he did not have one negative yardage play in that game, apparently. I watched all our plays in that game and did not come away thinking he was horrible. IN any case, Jones rolled the dice starting Peterman at florida, and he lost. The offense immediately looked like a more confident unit when Worley came in the second half. The bottom line is that we have no margin for error--coaches can't make bad decisions, and we can't have turnovers. If you are an underdog, the one thing you can't do is commit turnovers and made it easier for the other team to beat you.
