Could the quality of backup have anything to do with that? Steve Young was another great regular season QB (who mostly sputtered in the postseason until 94). Cassell has some quality years. Manning has never had a backup any better than me![]()
No doubt the quality of the back-up had a lot to do with it. It would be silly to try to say otherwise. But I think it's equally silly to stop at the QB position. The quality of the overall teams had even more to do with it than the quality of the back-ups.
BTW, did you know that Steve Young was 316 in 19 games as a starter, completing less than 55% of his passes and amassing 11 TDs and 21 INTs in the portion of his NFL career that was NOT played as a 49er?
And I'm not sure anyone thinks of Cassel as a legit NFL starter, even if he has proven that he might be better than Christian Ponder. He hasn't looked anywhere near as good as he did his 1 year starting for the Pats.
