Actually, a decent meal at a bona fide "steak house" usually runs around $100 a piece, even more if you include a decent bottle of wine. You could certainly hit the $700 mark with 2-3 couples.
Hard Rock Cafe isn't quite in the league of this type of restaurant. USDA Prime beef and well-appointed service are costly.
My guess is that he probably wasn't bragging or anything by posting it. He was simply showing how great of a guy Peyton Manning is. Like a, "guys, check this out. He's the best tipper I've ever seen. Great guy."
I understand the guy possibly had good intentions, but you just can't do stuff like that. I mean, how would you like it if a receipt with your name, credit card, and signature showed up online? I wouldn't be happy. If you say you wouldn't care, feel free to post pictures here of your own recent signed statments with tips.
Catering to celebrities has another angle too. If you have some celeb who has a sponsorship with Visa and they pay with an AMEX, this little picture could get the celebrity canned and the restaraunt sued. What if you have an actress who is publicly opposed to eating meat and someone snaps a picture of her receipt showing someone at her table had steak?
Of course any of you legal guys, would Peyton have standing to sue the establishment over this instance? I know he won't, just curious what his legal options would be?
That's stupid they fired him
Not really. This is clearly a very high class restaurant with a strict policy that is certainly known to its hirees. When you decide to buck policy, you buck yourself into the consequences mandated by that policy.
Why did he post that information anyway? To brag about the tip itself? Next time he might post on someone who gave a poor tip because he acted like a snot. To garner personal attention about having served Peyton Manning? Too many people today don't know how to shut up and respect confidentiality.
Plus having your payment info (credit card?) posted worldwide is surely unappreciated by any customer. especially in these times of I.D. theft.
You listed 3 options, but left out the most probable answer. As a server, the only reason I'd post it is to say "hey everyone, he's a phenomenal tipper. If you ever get a chance to wait on him, do it. You'll be glad you did. He was a great guy and was very generous. Best person I've ever waited on."
And him being somewhere where famous people somewhat attend regularly, if a person stands out more than others, you almost commend that person on being overtly generous.
If you work at a place where a $300-700 tab is normal, you're not gonna be bragging about tips in general. I've learned that since I've changed restaurants. Higher average checks generally means less competition and bragging between the servers.
crusse10, you may be right but that waiter upon being hired was undoubtedly made aware of the privacy policy of the restaurant. he actions indicate a gross lack of common sense under the circumstances. I feel for the guy in this economy we have and the nice gig he had. But he must have known the policy.
