Good to see you, Freak. I will read your intervention as a friendly nudge.

In the meantime, yeah, I get what you mean that its not a matter of just wishing it got better. But having lived through a LOT of crappy product at UF, I think I can honestly say that the fans, as a group, complaining and whining and voting with their feet makes a difference. It gets attention.

Its no fun to be doing it. For one thing, if you are, it means the team sux. And its not as if one person makes a difference on their own. But when a collective sense of exasperation is there, well, gone are the days of hiring questionable guys like Kiffin, or well meaning but over their heads guys like Dooley.

You get the administration to go out and spend the $6 mill/yr it takes to get the hottest commodity there is and you back him up with a star-studded coordinator and recruiting class.

You don't go from 3 star average to 5 star over night. But you can't keep hiring relative unknowns over and over, hoping for lightning to strike, and things just suddenly coming together.

So when I see the first thread when I go to the football forum YET ANOTHER testament to how great UT is based on a guy who has not put on the uniform in literally a decade and a half, I roll my eyes.

And as you say, I'm sure you already knew that, right?

:)

Good to see you too LG. You're just lucky that you and I go back far enough that I, to this point, have ignored the inbox full of daily requests I receive to send you packing.

Besides, I know those in the politics forum think very highly of you. :whistling:

I think you are (probably intentionally) reading to much into the thread. Schools use whatever assets they have to help sell their program. I can't imagine anyone choosing a school because of a former player, but a coach would be stupid not to use every available resource to his advantage. There a likely more than a few players who wouldn't mind chatting with and picking the brain of a future hall-of-famer, who just happens to be a former Vol. And fans who think it's a good idea aren't necessarily living in the past. Although, if I had to pick a past to re-live, it would certainly be the 90s. :)

Fair enough.

I just think UT's future depends in the near term, not on the QB with a cannon, not on the RB with quickness, and not on the WR with 4.2 speed.

It depends on bringing in the 4 and 5 star big uglies. Dominating some lines of scrimmage against SEC caliber competition. Hell, UF needs to do more of the same, though I would say that defensively we have been as good as anybody the last five + years in that respect.

Right now,Alabama is kicking everyone's arse for those players. We ain't going to be able to compete with them until we beef up to O-line. And UT has further to go because you can;t compete with them on either side right now.

Our O-line is A little better than you think.

Have you watched the opening to the SEC game of the week on CBS??????????

I'll be honest, I can't tell you what's on it. Is it simply Peyton Manning leading the band or is it a montage of images?

And Butch has explicitly stated that he wants the support and ambassadorship of Tennessee's legions of former players, many of whom were or are currently in the NFL. For this reason, he established, at the outset, an outreach program to lettermen and has since maintained a wide-open door policy to them, particularly Peyton. Law Gator, I will not go to the trouble of providing you documented references to recent Tennessee players who cited Peyton as a reason for their decision to attend UT. All you need to do, however, is refer back to Bray's interview with John Gruden to find evidence that Tennessee did, indeed, recruit him with the message of "you can become the next Peyton Manning."

Casey Clausen led the band before and I believe it was against Florida. Maybe it's a UT QB thing, I don't see a problem with it.

So you didn't answer the question. If Bama thought it was a huge game shouldn't they do some over-the-top celebration?

Seems to me they simply walk off the field like it is no big deal.

I don't recall the specifics in either instance (i.e. whether it was by invitation from the band director or by request from Peyton), but Peyton also led the band following our victory in the 1997 SEC Championship game (see Vols Fans Blog).

So what's wrong with the pic, please explain?

Nothing is wrong with the pic, per se.

If you were trying to prove something with the pic, what were you trying to prove? UT beating Bama? Great.

But you aimed the pic at lawgator. What were you trying to prove? UF beat UT that year.

Who cares what Bama does after they win. I assure you it's a big game for them as well. To say the Third Saturday isn't as important to them because they don't do the same things we do is just ridiculous.

I never said that. Of course it is a big game.

Did you happen to see Bama's celebration after this past season's game?
