Dont agree at all. Peyton got Hawks in his face all night long. The rush on him was awesome. Give all the credit to the Hawk defense and all the negative to Peyton's line. Peyton is so humble and just grins and takes this crap.Seems to me that over the years he hasn't had big time talent surrounding him-that he made average or mediocre players better. Moreno is an example as are a few others. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad he had Kent and Nash to throw to but they weren't what they were without him. Now, I think Faulk was good and he clicked with Harrison but other than Jamal when he was a frosh Manning has been making his own success!
I was thinking the same thing. Somehow this horrible supporting cast put Manning in the record book.
If you watched the game, Peyton had one bad throw, and the other INT was due to his arm being hit due to poor OL blocking, and this one led to 7pts. The OL was a problem all night. Otherwise, he managed to throw a TD and had a 75% completion percentage.
To the posters that realize and analyze that the Seahawks exploited the weaknesses of Denver's secondary, ST's, and the DL of the Seahawks outplayed a poorly blocking Denver OL, you got it right. The the poster's whose analysis is that Peyton "choked," incorrect. Of course the uninformed media will say this, but that is just them talking about what they think people will want to hear..."storylines" if you will.
Really, Seattle's gameplan was better, adjustments were better, & execution was better. Specifically their ST's, secondary turning over Thomas, DL outscheming and outplaying the Denver OL. Essentially it was Denver's worst game as a team of the year at the worst time. A perfect storm of bad for Denver, and everything went right for Seattle. Very inexplicable. Reminded me of those amazing Bills teams of the early '90's that just seemed to have nothing go right in any Super Bowl except against the Giants, which was probably the best Super Bowl in history.
here's the deal with manning....imo.
if you give him the things that any qb needs.....pass protection, receivers to get separation, etc.....he can do more with that than maybe anyone who ever played the game.
if you deny him those things, he doesn't make plays that overcome that. his "greatness" doesn't overcome lack of pass protection, receivers being covered, etc, etc.
he generally doesn't make that unbelievable throw with a db right on top of the wr as he is about to be drilled by a defensive end.
that's not a criticism because you shouldn't be able to do that.
but, the point is that a lot of times a player's greatness is judged on his ability to get his team overcome the liabilities of his teammates.
so, if there's a honest criticism of manning, it's that despite how good he may be.....he is just like every other human....if his teammates ain't getting it done, neither does he.
now the weird thing is during this super bowl, i do not think his passes had the zip on them that was there all year and i don't know why.
if they played that game 10 times, seattle would win all 10. the broncos were inferior in every facet of the game. that was a team effort to get dominated that bad. peyton played bad, the o-line got dominated, the WR weren't open when the OL held up, the defense didn't get a stop, special teams gave up a TD. it was just pitiful. reflective of the discrepancy between the AFC and NFC right now.
It gets said all the time because its so true. Just ask Brady.
I agree with your overall point here, but Peyton was absolutely terrible tonight and he had one of those games where he just absolutely choked.
I would not go so far as to say terrible. Certainly he did not play a good game, but basically making it look like it was Peyton's fault is an overstatement. Three turnovers were charged to him, but two were the fault of the offensive line letting the rush get to him, and frankly, the receivers were doing a poor job of getting open. The whole team looked flat from the beginning. I don't think much of Carroll with the cheating at USC, but I have to give it to him that he is a motivator. They were definitely much more fired up than Denver.
