PG Destinee Wells commits to Tennessee 🙏 🙏 🙏

According to ESPN’s analysis of Miss Wells she averaged over 19.5% points a game and shot 45.5% from deep. There is also some concern related to her height and the fact that she struggled when Belmont played top competition. However, she is listed as one of the top ten players in the portal as of now. I think Lexi Donarski, who is listed as the number 2 player in the portal and the 2022 Big 12 Defensive Player of the year, would be a significant upgrade at guard. She is an excellent shooter from deep.
the notion that she “struggled against top competition” is a little bit of a stretch. she’s torched some top competitors throughout her career (Tennessee, Oregon, Louisville, Villanova, Indiana, and Gonzaga).

Her lowest scoring games and most notably, lowest shooting percentages were against some of the better competition. Which is like, duh, of course it's harder against better teams. But this player seems to be constantly improving plus she's never had teammates like she's about to have. So reasonable to think she will step that level of performance up.

She's such a logical fit and this feels right. I'm delighted it happened so quickly. I know her coach is upset, and it that the is tough that the best mid major players get taken. But if the Belmont coach got a P5 job offer, I bet he'd be all over it.

Lexi....come on down! We will have at least five more open spots.

Wonderful news Her stats have been great throughout her career with a great deal of consistency. Great shooter including 45.5 percent from 3 point range. Every year all conference and all conference tournament. As Solphomore, did great against Oregon and UT at our NCAA regional. As a Freshman, the only Freshman in the country with these averages: 17.5 points, 4.5 assists, and 2.4 steals. Welcome aboard Destinee!

Destinee Wells Stats | ESPN

Her scoring efficiency is 1.33 and her shooting efficiency is 53 percent which are even outstanding numbers for a post player. To compare with Walker who had a 1.02 scoring efficiency and a 43 percent shooting efficiency. So definitely a huge offensive upgrade for the PG position.

Compared to Donarski which we have talked about a lot. She has a 1.12 scoring efficiency and 47 shooting efficiency.

Then Jefferson another player we have talked about 1.36 scoring efficiency and a 48 percent shooting efficiency.

Some other Lady Vols

Jackson 1.20 and 50 percent scoring eff
Horston 1.01 and 43 percent
Puckett 1.07 and 48 percent
Darby 1.18 and 55 percent
Striplin 1.18 and 52 percent
Powell 1.11 and 41 percent
Hollingshead 1.22 and 49 percent

If we take five more players our early season will be just as bad or worse than last year. I hope we learned a lesson about an overstuffed roster as well as a murderous early schedule.

To be fair, neither Wells nor Jefferson played against the same level of competition as the LVs. Rickea and Jordy would have put up some crazy numbers in the MVC

I'm not exactly sure how ESPN came to that conclusion. Here's how Wells did against NET top 50 teams this year:
  • Louisville: 20 points, 7-10 FGs, 1-1 3FGs, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 turnovers
  • MTSU: 5 points, 2-3 FGs, 1-1 3FGs, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 turnovers
  • Iowa: 9 points, 4-17 FGs, 0-4 3FGs, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 turnovers
  • Villanova: 16 points, 5-10 FGs, 1-2 3FGs, 1 rebound, 3 assists, 7 turnovers
  • Georgia: 12 points, 3-7 FGs, 3-7 3FGs, 2 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 turnovers
She had a rough shooting night against Iowa and turned the ball over against Villanova. Otherwise, this looks pretty darn solid to me. That's 45% shooting and 40% 3pt. shooting with a 1.4 A/TO ratio against some really good teams.
Even if she doesn't produce her averages, she also won't be the focal point of the offense. Those shooting stats are excellent for a leading scorer, and should be even better when paired with a player like Jackson. This should solve the PG issues for next season.

Good point. Bet her assist stats are about to soar though. Hopefully this solves PG for 2 yrs.

I only saw a tweet from an assistant coach. Seemed to be quite animated about some team in the tournament making direct or indirect contact with player(s) on his team. We're all adults here so whether we said it out loud or not...lot of folks thought he was talking about TN. Or you at least had a list and TN was on it. I know I did for a few reasons. Belmont is in TN. TN needed a steady PG. As far as I know...she never showed interest in any other school. Nothing he can do about a player leaving, but I certainly understand why he would be upset, and probably explains why this happened so fast. Just keeping it real.

You are still thinking about the old style way of recruiting. Put freshmen on the bench.

Now days, take the experienced transfers. Think of it as having a minor league baseball team. Pick up the ones who developed as a 19 / 20 year old.

Playing 10-12 early isn't an issue. But, we do need to tone down the schedule....a lot.

Learn from Mulkey. Can't stand her, but she knows how to win. Creampuff scheduling.

On the boys side, the FAU coach is complaining about that. Which is kinda funny, because he will be in a new job by this time next week.

I know some of us are going to say "hey, duplicate post," but this one gets the name right, so I vote what says it stays.

Big (small?) news!

Here's the thing. You wonder why not just say the name of the team, right? I have two theories. One, he figured everyone would know who he was talking about. And two, he wasn't trying to jeopardize any future employment. He is an assistant. Probably didn't want the 'snitch' tag. lol

There really aren’t any good open jobs on the men’s side. Most likely May will sign a raise/extension at FAU and try to get a big job next year.

It would be a huge adjustment as a longtime supporter of Lady Vol basketball to see a schedule full of creampuffs, but I think most would probably agree to next season's schedule being maybe half as brutal as this year's was. I'd still like to see a few top opponents just to see how we're measuring up.
