Pig Howard update per CBJ:

It's too bad that whenever I think of PH I think of the UGA loss. Heck of an effort though.

I'm guessing he thinks of his career at UT as costing UGA and Vandy. I think that's what caused his issues. Just my momma opinion on it. I'd rather it be anything else actually.

I think of him more regarding the Vandy game. I "forgave" him almost immediately after the Georgia game because, like you said Freak, it was a great effort on his part, for the entire game. The uneeded block in the back penalty that cost us a win vs Vandy and bowl appearance however .......

If you have kids that are below the age of 12, yes. If not, then it's a Disney movie character from the movie "Tangled."

Ah. Mine are 19 and 22. If you'd made a Dragon Ball Z or Land Before Time reference I might have got it. :)

People really need to not put that game on Pig. We shouldn't be in a position against Vanderbilt in Neyland where we need to get a touchdown and spend the whole game hoping they don't score another one.

And I know I've said it before, probably too many times at this point, but if I'm going to put the blame for the Vanderbilt game on one player I can think of a much better candidate than Pig.... a candidate who over the course of 4 quarters threw for 50 yards, 2 INT, and 0 TD.

So he comes back hard this year and redeems himself in his own mind.

The kid's got talent out the wazoo and I think we'll see some significant plays out of him this year. He's got a supportive coach, a supportive team and (generally) a supportive fan base. The rest of it is on him to bring his confidence level to where it should be.

Pearson for sure, not close. I thought Johnson flashed well in limited time last year and, as I mentioned, Coach Z singled him out unsolicited in his interview with Ainge last week.

Not sure if Josh Smith is playing in the slot or not but Coach Z also mentioned him as doing very well and progressing a lot since last year....his hands were awful as a freshman, but he's bigger than Pig, a very talented athlete and I would argue just as fast (runs 4.5 iirc), runs great routes.

Pig will obviously be ahead of Wharton and Jenkins in terms of experience right now, but I think he's gonna be below them on the depth chart going into fall camp given his actions which led to him being dismissed from the team. Talent-wise, I don't know....Jenkins is bigger and stronger and I think people are underestimating just how explosive and fast Vic is.

I'm not sure who else we have working at slot. Just think given that Pig has a lot of work to do to climb back up the ladder and the talent that is now "ahead" of him is a lot different than it was last year when it was a given that he would be the starter.

A lot of this is going on the assumption that Wharton won't redshirt this year. Being that he isn't an EE, there is a chance the staff will have him sit this year out and get some seasoning before coming on strong next year.

It's not like we're hurting at the receiver position this year for one of our 2014 class to RS.

Sounds like Dobbs is future first round pick as he stacks up a lot better than Eli Manning did as a true freshmen.

Hopefully he becomes a better pro than Eli - look at these dismal numbers:

4 for 18 against the Ravens for 27 yards in 2004.
8-22 for 59 yards against Miami in 2007.
THREE years later an NO improvement!!!!

Terrible pocket presents for a kid that has quarterbacking in his jeans.

ps; I found out somehow this guy has 2 superbowl rings. Somebody call Sculley and Mulder.

Gotta mostly agree here but, IMO, we are a better team with Pig on it.

Can agree that we shouldn't have been in that position vs a very average Vandy team....however, we were and the fact is that despite an overall atrocious offensive showing and a bad gameplan, we would've won that game had Dobbs' td run not been called back due to Pig's needless penalty.

why do you hate Dobbs so much?

Vic is pretty much an afterthought this year at slot IMO. Was just trying to be thorough in comparing where I think Pig is/will be in relation to the other slot WRs. I hope we see Vic returning punts and kicks, hope he's up to it as a true freshman.

I agree. IMHO he'll add quality depth to the slot WR position. Also thought I read that he and Vic were fielding punts together this summer.

Or our D could have stopped Vandy from driving 90 yards for a game winning TD.

Either way. Defense, which had played pretty well all night folded like a cheap tent that last drive for sure.

Was just discussing the Vandy game in the context of Pig. If Dobbs' td run doesn't get called back due to Pig's penalty, we'd have been up 17-7 and it wouldn't have mattered what the defense did that last Vandy possession.

Bottom line is you're right.....plenty of blame to go around for that ridiculous loss.

I get your point and I also think that our staff won't redshirt him for the sake of redshirting him. If he outplays the other guys, he'll see the field.

It will be fun to see whether he can take over one of the kick or punt return jobs. It wouldn't surprise me if he sees the field in that capacity before we see him at WR. Playing WR in our offense probably has a much steeper learning curve than kick returns. Returns are mostly about nerves and instinct.

I don't think CBJ would redshirt just to redshirt either. But right now we only have two dedicated receivers in the 2015 class. Sure that can change before signing day, but having a player like Vic sitting for a year and doing nothing but getting better for the next?

We've got plenty of folks that can return punts and kicks. And we are blessed (Lordy it feels great to say this) with a plethora of talent at receiver. Redshirting one or two is an easy way to get depth in case the 2015 class doesn't pan out for some reason.

I am wondering if Young will continue as return man. Or...maybe a split return team of Young and Pig? Both have the moves.

Yes, but on the other hand, late in the Vandy game, he did reach out to make a catch on the sideline, that was ruled incomplete, when the replay shows he caught it and was in. We shouldn't beat ourselves up when we do our best and those around us get it wrong. Has happened to me.
