Pig Howard update per CBJ:

I do believe athletes should be compensated for generating revenue for numerous outside institutions and organizations as well as their not-for-profit universities.

The dynamics of collegiate sports have changed since 1960 to now to not just being a sport but a multi-billion dollar industry. If every collegiate athlete decided not be play sports for universities that industry goes away.

Why should coaches, college administrators, and other sponsoring members be compensated if the person actually providing the resources isn't?
I guess I misunderstood. I thought that the cost of a 4 year college education had some value.

Come on Grad. You know that scholarship over 4 years valued at $80k+ at UT, the training table, the access to world class training facilities and trainers, the tutors, the contacts made that'll mean job offers to players just for being on the team, the exposure and preparedness for those able to play in the NFL where they can makes millions....that's nothing, those things don't count. These kids are being exploited and used up by the machine and "The Man".....

I just had to give you a like. If the "Man" had just paid for my beer purchases at The Place, I would have been ahead of the game.

Help me out here..... I got out of undergrad in '83 and the Place opened while I was there..... I think.

You are a '72 model? Was there an earlier Place?

Or did you RETURN to the scene of your crimes after you graduated.

Tap Room got most of mine, with probably the Place after that, while it was open.

For food on the Strip, it was Roman Room (George).

That sounds a lot like the mentality 200 years ago. If we give them food (not much, just some until they complain we'll give them more), shelter (not the best to sleep at night, but it'll do), and a good working environment (they are around the people they like and have all the tools to get the job done), maybe we don't have to pay them. We profit and everybody should be happy.

"The Man" has won.

IMO you two both described polar opposites. Somewhere in the middle, perhaps closer to one end of the spectrum than the other, lies the truth. I don't know what the answer is but sensationalism is just muddying the water.

Are you suggesting that the current arrangement where a young talented athlete, who earns a scholarship and is provided a free education and many, many perks and benefits in exchange for competing in athletics on behalf of his/her university, is akin to slavery?

well done. I was almost convinced this wasn't sarcasm. Rare to see it pulled off so well

I'm stating that the mentality of giving revenue generating athletes no other option other than playing sports at the collegiate level, having to devote usually over 40 hours a week, not being able to obtain employment, having to put your body through physical abuse, and not being able to get any monetary benefit out of it all sounds pretty close.

Yea, you get perks and things that other people put value on, but you aren't able to purchase items that you want and/or need. They don't have the option to go to the next level and see how they can profit immediately.

Again, the end all to this ordeal is simple...

YOU DONT HAVE TO PLAY! It's a choice, not a mandate!

Isn't it a mandate that you have to go to college or an inferior league before you can actually go to the NFL or NBA? MLB has it right, the other two not so much.

There must have been an earlier "Place," because it was alive and well in the late 60's to early 70's. Our current District Attorney General worked the door some back then. It was on the same side of the Strip as the Roman Room, but further down the street. By the way, George was there back then too.

We also threw a few down at Jose's La Cantina, which was owned by a future Sheriff of Knox County by the name of Joe Jenkins. He WAS Jose'.

Unbelievable. For you to say that a college athlete voluntarily entering into an agreement with a university, whereupon he/she is provided enormous benefits in exchange for playing the sport of his or her choice "sounds pretty close" to slavery.....you should be ashamed of yourself IMHO. Maybe you should educate yourself on what the true conditions of slavery are/were before suggesting that what a D1 college athlete experiences is anywhere near the same stratosphere.....it's a ludicrous assertion.

Did you agree with firing Fulmer?
Hiring Kiffin?
Hiring Dooley?
Firing Pearl?
Hiring Martin?
Hiring Tyndall?

Obama?

I'd say we've probably agreed more than once lol

1) Yes, but I would have given him another year at least to right the ship.

2)At the time, yes. Looking back, no way.

3) See #2 above.

4) Yes.

5) Lukewarm, but okay with it.

6) See #5 above.

7) Is this a trick question?

I'm all NO's, 72. Sorry!

Edit.. On the fence with Tyndall. Just not much to love about the guy at this point. So "lukewarm" might be appropriate.

What?! I guess comprehension isn't your best quality. Mentality and the actually events are two separate discussions. You put value into an education and benefits, whereas most of these athletes see value has money as well as most of America. GTFOH for suggesting D1 football and slavery are similar, but the mentality of how we treat D1 football has to change as well, they aren't student athletes, they are athletes that have to be students.

NO one is forcing these kids to play sports. The NFL rules don't force them to play college ball. They can get a job like the rest of us. I'm sick of these post. They can choose to be students, and reap the benefits of an education, character building, life skills, room and board, and the many other perks, or they can move on.

As long as its COLLEGE football, they are STUDENT athletes. As soon as the try to screw with that, I'm done. We already have the NFL. I don't watch minor league baseball, or NBA developmental league. The appeal of college ball is the connection to the student athlete. Mess with that and watch how quickly it backfires.
