Pig Howard update per CBJ:

I am starting to rethink the paying of college students who play sports. They must be starving, because the Heisman Trophy winner had to steal $32 worth of crab legs just so he wouldn't go hungry. Why don't they feed those poor starving kids, so they don't have to steal?

I'm stating that the mentality of giving revenue generating athletes no other option other than playing sports at the collegiate level, having to devote usually over 40 hours a week, not being able to obtain employment, having to put your body through physical abuse, and not being able to get any monetary benefit out of it all sounds pretty close.

Yea, you get perks and things that other people put value on, but you aren't able to purchase items that you want and/or need. They don't have the option to go to the next level and see how they can profit immediately.

They're welcome to pay for their own training and join various teams then attend tryouts - just because there's no major 'minor league' like baseball has doesn't mean they don't exist. It's not as though a farm system has anything to do with us anyway, the NFL would be responsible for that. The truth is football costs a LOT of money as does training these players (most of whom will bust in terms of the next level) it's not supportable. The training they receive in college is superior and far more costly (free for them) than they'd get elsewhere.

For basketball players... well they can go to Europe and get paid immediately out of high school. They usually tank although at least one high profile player made it. The hard reality for them is that most aren't ready and going pro immediately means that European team or world team expects you to fulfill your contract obligations immediately and act like a professional. When you don't - they dump you. Like it or not, colleges and universities give far more options, more training, more support, and invest a lot more in student athletes and that's why the floodgates haven't opened and we haven't seen a mass exodus to Europe for an instant paycheck in basketball.

Bring back minor league football! It was around until the late 70's-early 80's. Then these oppressed "student athletes" can go into an instructional program for 3 years and maybe hook up with the NFL in 3 years.

Or is it that they want to be paid more $$$ by these "rich" universities rather than a minor league system and have to actually work for a living?

It's all about the money driven by the lawyers.

This is so true. You nailed it.

So basically as long as you are not forced you should never try to change things to possibly improve your lot in life.

Sounds crazy to accept status quo when $$$$$ is going through the roof. Just sayin

I would hate to see Pig not succeed on & off the field. I see to many talented athletes go down the wrong road & take the wrong path. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that numerous people would give anything to have. I hope this situation ends with a positive outcome.

I wouldn't mind it if Pig Howard went to GT if he doesn't come back to UT. Coach Johnson could switch him to a running back in his option offene.

I'd bet my left one he will manage to get back

I admire your confidence, but I also can't imagine anyone taking that bet.

OK they win and they get a left one?
What are they going to do with that?
What would you take as a bet against your left one?
2:1 odds?
Mine is worth a lot to me, but not sure if it would be valuable to anyone else.

just saying......

I wish someone would have given me a free education, training table, housing, equipment and travel expenses to race bikes for 4 years. I promise I would not have complained.

On that note, more and more colleges are developing BMX racing programs and providing scholarships to go with them. Maybe my fast little kid can get a free "ride" some day :D

Maybe the guy has 2 left ones, one of which he won from someone who bet HIS left one. At that point, he can afford to lose one left one, and if you win it, you will have an extra left one to bet, with no real consequences. I say take the bet.

I'm still having issues with this.
I'm pretty sure that my 5 kids are all mine. If I start using someone else's left one... who knows? I really don't want anything to do with any other dudes left one, and I don't want my wife comparing my old ones to my new left one.
And what your saying is that the left one that he is betting may not even be his to begin with? Did he have it implanted or does he keep it in a jar? I do have a really good joke about a bullfight that has to do with left & right, but I'm still "working" right now.

If you have 5 kids, odds are that you have worn out the left one, if not both.

Why are you guys even worried with Pigg? According to most on here Hurd is the next Boobie Miles!

"There are some things that he still has to do before we even think about bringing him back into our football family. He understands the criteria that has to be met. It's an ongoing process, and we'll make a decision here in the next week or two. A lot of it has to do with getting our academic reports back and the finalization of grades."

Per TFP in Chatt; thought some of you might like to know where things are right now. It appears just reading between the lines that it is an academic issue, not "weed" which has been suggested by some here and seems to be the first assumption anytime a player is in the doghouse.

Sheesh! That's not a promising statement.

SOUNDS LIKE PIG IS COMING BACK!!!!!!

Good. We need some depth at slot behind Pearson. I also heard Swain talk a lot today about Kameel Jackson possibly walking on this summer if he's able to get his grades. He would be a great addition as well.
