Big Ten players follow Pac-12, form unity group

The Big 10 has joined the Pac 12 with their player unity group and a list of demands, one being that all present and FUTURE medical expenses related to COVID infections of players be covered by the universities, and NO liability waivers are to be issued and signed by any player.

Got to hand it to these players, it took them about 50 years but they finally figured out that with all the revenue football brings in, they are the ones who actually have the leverage if they act in large numbers. I’m against it, but it’s inevitable......they’re gonna get paid by next year and college football will change forever......for the worse in my opinion.

Thoughts?

It's hard to take issue with any of those demands.

The Pac 12 players' demands were quite different, even going as far to say that if any sports are eliminated because players would start collecting 50% of all revenue, that university endowments should be reached into to cover the difference (which would be illegal, AFAIK). A few of their demands read like they were written by a 9-year-old.

Nothing on how many players make up either the PAC 12 or Big 14 groups. Could be 10 guys, nobody knows.

I agree with any demands that have to do with player safety.

I do not agree with any demands for change in contract for compensation or political purposes. These players are given way more than other academic students. And there is no place in sports for politics.

Its not really up to us to determine what others will and won't do, or can demand. I mean, its like me saing.... "I think its cool for onevol to work 18 hours shifts in a dangerous coal mine for a $1.25 a hour."

Ultimately, much of this isn't going anywhere and what we are witnessing is the end of big money college sports.

The players can demand anything they want, they can demand the schools take the black jelly beans out of the bowl of jelly beans. (Van Halen-ism) For the record, I'm kind of sick of the schools, and I'm to the point where I don't believe my tax dollars should be going to higher education either federal or state dollars. Its all an enterprise, its time to take the taxpayer out of their enterprise, imo, at least as far as my tax dollars are concern.

My initial reaction was "no way", but once I heard the demands I'm in the same boat as you. Can't really blame them.

All future medical expenses due to covid is a no go.

I'd take exception to the long term liability for covid medical expenses.

Covid is a society problem, not a college football problem. They havent earned the right for universities(taxpayers) to foot some bill 5 years down that road that can be connected to covid.

Beginning of the end of college football
You’re wrong. Too much money to be had. It goes away one semester and everyone who kicked the golden goose to death would form a line to the left to treat the next one better.

When they started paying coaches unreasonable salaries this moment was inevitable. My thoughts are to form a unity fan group that refuses to pay more than $20 to watch a football game and reduce cable TV rates to a reasonable rate. You would see very quickly who has the leverage.

Theyre college students. They could get COVID from their fat little girlfriends. Either play or don’t.

It's a definite Pandora's box.

I think it’s the one demand that could derail the season for these conferences. I can’t imagine a University agreeing to pay for the medical expenses of a player with long term lung damage when they are 50 years old due to contracting COVID as a player When they were 18-21.

There definitely would need to be a cap negotiated into it.

I think to no waiver of liability will kill any season. Then what will these guys do. This **** might be around another year. And who’s to say revenue will be as high in the future. I’ve already decided this was my last year to buy 4 in Y8
