Players Don't Get Dismissed for Misdemeanors

They all will definitely not be kicked off the team for this alone. Players don't get dismissed for misdemeanors as the OP said; however, if this is the second or third disciplinary problem for any of the players, then they might be dismissed.

CBS reported earlier today that he would deal with each individually based on the facts that he learns combined with individual history (problems/disciplinary issues). Some may see playing time in the next couple games, but then again NONE may see playing time the next couple of games. Thus far, he's onlyi talked to 2 of the 4 players involved.

I would bet that T. Smith, Brian Williams, and Goins return, and Cam Tatum will be dismissed if the rumors of prior failed drug tests are true.

Dismissing players for smoking weed is crazy---most players do it---it's no big deal.

I agree with that much. I think you dismiss them for being stupid. The weed and guns just make it easier. I thought all year that these guys looked baked on the court, now we know. Maybe whomever loaned them the car will cop to the guns and the drugs...they still got caught speeding with an open container. Stupid! Contrary to the OP, I believe the coach can suspend/dismiss a player for anything. Maybe these guys think it's cool to have their mugshots up on ESPN. Stupid!

Stupid, can't argue - at all. I don't believe for a second that the players are playing stoned. Recreational, I can see. No way you can look your temmates in the face and take the court. Maybe it's just me, but i couldn't, woudn't and didn't when I was in college.

Well, I might be wrong, though it would explain a lot lol. Leaves me wondering...you can only fit so many basketball players in a Charger, what if they had a van? How many players would have been along for the ride?

Bull. One of the guns had a serial number filed off. That is serious. That is a black market illegal firearm. Quit being a homer. If this is swept under the rug, UT has got some big problems brewing inside the compliance department. If they get out of all this with a slap on the rist, do not cry and ***** and moan when a lack of institutional control is eventually landing on tennessee's campus.:bad:

Oh no........ "a black market illegal firearm" you gotta be kiddin me!!!

and what the hell does a criminal charge to a player have to do NCAA compliance???

Well, yes it would explain a lot :). And maybe I'm being naive, but I just don't see them doing it. I don't believe that they coud possibly take the court stoned, thinking it would improve their game.

I'm glad it wasn't a van! :p

Last nite I was kind of defending these guys but a friend of mine came by tonight and we discussed this again. I know (as I posted last nite) young people do stupid stuff but the fact remains, when they signed the contract to play with UT they forfieted those rights of young and dumb. I have done a total 360 of my view and I think if found guilty of the charges they should be dismissed from the team and school. These players when they accepted the right to play for the orange and white they seperated themselves from the others and they should know the rules and the results if they do not follow the rules. It is time to set an example and if guilty they are GONE!

in ONE YEAR the University of Tennessee campus has had SEVEN NCAA INFRACTIONS, ONE ONGOING INVESTIGATION IN RECRUITING VIOLATIONS, 7 PLAYERS ARRESTED CHARGED WITH ROBBERY, OPEN CONTAINERS, WEAPONS, ILLEGAL WEAPONS, DRUGS, ECT....

You think this all goes without notice by the NCAA?

There are serious problems inside that department. Serious.

Players committing violations of law are not NCAA violations. There are enough of those. Don't try to turn pot charges as NCAA violations.

I need a bit of clarification please... I understand that all 4 players are over 21 years of age. To the best of my knowledge, there is no law prohibiting use of alcohol by UT students. I have not heard that anyone has been charged for DUI. So what's up with the screams about the guys having beer? The open container violation is another matter but it seems to be a fairly minor if the driver was not intoxicated. Driving with an open container wasn't even illegal in 1975 (no need to ask how I know) but the cops sure looked at you closely.
The law quoted by a previous poster indicates that the act of removing or defacing the serial number on a gun is a felony. Does anyone know the law on posession of a firearm with a defaced serial number? That's a totally different thing and the quoted law is irrelevant. I don't know the law and am curious...

Welcome to the board :hi: I remember the time you speak of :) We have some lawyers one here that can answer you much better than I, but they did just charge them with misdemeanors and they did check the serial numbers before charges were filed.

It's against FEDERAL law to knowingly POSSESS a gun with a defaced serial number if said gun has EVER been transported across State borders, unless you are living in the same State in which the gun was manufactured.
In many States (and maybe all of them) its against STATE law to POSSESS a gun with a defaced serial number. That's regardless of whether or not the gun was imported from another jurisdiction, and regardless of when the number was obliterated.

Thanks for the reply Panthro. I thought I'd managed to kill the most active thread on the forum with a couple of simple questions. 10 pages in a day or so, then Nada!

Do you have a reference for the above laws? Not that I don't believe you but there seems to be a bit of uncertainty in your answers. Is this a class 1 misdemeanor, a class 2, a felony, what? Anyone have any definitive info?

You should know that I'm no gun expert. I simply read the questions posted above, and I googled the issue. My last post was a copy and paste from some gun website. I'll try to find it again.

So if the crooked KnoxvillePD does not give them what they deserve, you are ok with all the gun toting, pot smoking thugs back on the team to play like nothing happened.

This is what the hell is wrong with this university. Maybe something big does need to happen to get peoples attention. Man oh man. Hey, if you are a coach or player come to tennessee where you can smoke pot, carry guns, commit robbery, drink and drive, screw orange pride, and rack up violations when you feel like it. We love it. And guess what? Nothing will happen as long as KPD pleads it all down from a felony. Hell, screw it, felonies welcome too:good!:

They would be beating down the doors to get in.
