Players Don't Get Dismissed for Misdemeanors

College kids smoke weed. Inner-city kids often carry guns. Sometimes they drive without licenses and curse too. Me thinks you need to get informed.

SOME college kids smoke weed, and SOME inner-city kids often carry guns. But then again SOME college kids have slipped Rohypnol into a girls drink in order to take advantage of her. Just because SOME people do something that is illegal doesn't mean you should just embrace it as the norm. What kind of backwards logic are you using? Regardless of whether you think smoking weed is "no big deal" or whether you think carrying a gun is "something kids do," athletes represent their school and have to be held to a higher standard than other kids their age. This is a black eye on UT athletics and to suggest that it is in ANY way a good recruiting tool for Pearl to use to "chum up" to pot smoking, gun carrying, inner city point guards is completely absurd. If this had happened to Kentucky, you'd be singing a much different tune today.

Haha! Like I said, "Cheif," I'll make sure to spell things out for you next time. (Judging by your grammar, you're in need of more help than I previously imagined.)

You don't need to be a "mind reader" to use common sense.

When I see GUNS=FELONY

I seems to me like you're saying any gun crime is a felony. I wasn't the only one that thought this. So, maybe your common sense isn't so common.

Oh, and excuse me for misspelling "cheif". YOU GOT ME!

Congrats.

Rob Lewis is now reporting that all charges against the 4 are misdemeanors.

We will have some suspensions, perhaps for Wednesdays game, and then all players will be back.

My biggest problem is with Tatum drinking while driving. I also don't like the Marijuana in the car.

The guns, I could care less about. I own 6 hand-guns myself. Yes, mine are registered and I properly stow them when driving, but the word "gun" alone doesn't send me into a frenzy like some. There is nothing inherently immoral about having a gun in your possession. Failing to have it properly licensed IMO is like driving without a proper license.

Tatum should get 2 games suspended for driving while drinking and whoever owns the guns and Marijuana should get 1 game. If any of the 4 neither own the gun(s) and can't be tied to the Weed, they should face no punishment whatsoever IMO.

Is this a serious post....or is this sarcasm?

You must be out of your mind....all of these players should suffer a substantial suspension for these actions.

I hate it when people try to say, "they are just kids, and kids do this kind of stuff." Well, it's still unacceptable!

This is my logic: If that was your child who had the gracious opportunity to play for the University of Tennessee on scholarship and he was arrested for open container, weapons charges, and/or illegal drug possession what would you do? I would demand for CBP to dismiss him at least for the rest of the year. Let him sit out and then if he wants to play again he can ask to come back to UTK or go to another school after a year.

These kids are people, they do make mistakes but these a huge mistakes in life... not a turnover in a high profile game. But I would ask CBP to do this because he (they) will only learn from their mistakes with consequences. I would be doing it for his benefit.

John Calipari is praying that Pearl does something that stupid. I can see him in the living room of players we are recruiting. "Tennessee will kick you off the team for making a simple mistake -- a misdemeanor. We understand at KY that everyone makes mistakes. If you deserve a second change for a minor matter, we'll give it to you. Tennessee won't."

You are so out of touch with today's 17 and 18 year olds. Might as well suggest we eliminate our basketball program.

First off, all four of these guys are at least 21. Secondly, not everyone under the age of 25 drives around with an illegal handgun in their car. Could have a big impact on recruiting in that parents of high schoolers really don't want their son going to a University where half the team smokes weed and are packing.

Smith = thug. Williams = thug. Tatum = thug. Goins = thug. Yo, yo, yo! Anybody wanna meet up with me tonight for a ride down I-40 with a couple beers and guns in the car? Yeah, that sounds like a simple mistake that young people make all the time! I can't believe some of the comments I am reading on here suggesting that this is "not that bad" and "we all did stuff like this when we were kids". No, we didn't. Why do they need guns? Don't get me wrong, I love guns and all things that go boom. But they have no need for them in a car with alcohol and weed. They have no need for them on a college campus unless it is the University of The First 48 (Memphis), or any school in Atlanta or Detroit. Thugs.

You're really reaching on this dude. It was immediately obvious what he was talking about, but you seem intent on busting his chops on this just because you don't agree with his stance on the issue with the players.

srsly.. it's 11am... getting your 9mm/budweiser/herb on and you get pulled for speeding on Alcoa Hwy??? :eek:lol:

you smoke so much weed in the car that the cop is getting a second-hand buzz.... you can't make this stuff up

Yea, sorry about the name calling. But I am sick and tired of our fans acting like this is all not a problem. We have HUGE PROBLEMS RIGHT NOW. People like you who keep wanting this crap swept under the freakin rug are why we never stop this crap. All four need to be GONE. lane Kiffin just swept the other incident under the rug. Now we will sweep this under the rug. When does it stop?

I hardly believe dismissing two of the three football players is "sweeping it under the rug": I feel your disappointment...i have it as well....but try to make correct statements when defending your position....:nono:

Send all four of them packing. This is pathetic, as bad as it is someone is going to have to be made an example. If they don't care anymore about being a UT Vol than that send them all home. Most probably believe this is a bit extreme but if we keep slaping them on the wrist their just going to keep doing it. They are an embarrassment to the University, the only punishment good enough for these four and that will deliver the message to the other student athletes is to dismiss them from both the team and the university.

I completely agree. Letting them off on a little warning and a 1 game suspension would be bogus and look really bad on our program. They all knew there was guns in the car, one of the guns had the serial #'s filed off on it, which is a felony. I mean, who are these guys? 50cent? Kick them all off. They were smokin weed and packin heat, not representing the University in a positive light and they obviously dont care about this school or their own careers.

Everybody saying keep them needs to realize this is the second involvement for Tn atheletes in a few months where there were drugs and guns. Not a good image to be portraying to recruits parents or children who look up to these guys as role models. Kick them off the team Pearl, they asked for it.

a zero tolerance policy for scholarship student-athlete possession of hand guns. Mandatory suspension from team activities until legal issues are resolved; then, automatic and permanent dismissal if found guilty.

Oh my, ever heard of context?

LOL... I'm well aware that guns, in and of themselves, are not illegal in the United States. However, you can't go riding around with an unregistered firearm with the serial numbers filed off.

If you ever decided to take your "7 felonies" on a joyride, and didn't have a permit to carry a concealed weapon/handgun carry permit, you'd find yourself in some legal trouble as well.

As a matter of fact, the Supreme Court recently ruled that the right to keep and bear arms is an "individual right." That wasn't always the case.

C'mon... use some common sense and, above all, comprehension.

Carrying a gun without a carry permit is not a felony in TN.

come on.. what's the worst thing that could happen with 20 year old kids riding around with 9mm's/pot/budweiser? :eek:lol:

Washington Wizards Basketball Players Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenden Reportedly in Gun Dispute - ABC News

It's nice to see that Pearl's players are consistent. They make just as stupid decisions off the court as they do while playing.

So if the crooked KnoxvillePD does not give them what they deserve, you are ok with all the gun toting, pot smoking thugs back on the team to play like nothing happened.

This is what the hell is wrong with this university. Maybe something big does need to happen to get peoples attention. Man oh man. Hey, if you are a coach or player come to tennessee where you can smoke pot, carry guns, commit robbery, drink and drive, screw orange pride, and rack up violations when you feel like it. We love it. And guess what? Nothing will happen as long as KPD pleads it all down from a felony. Hell, screw it, felonies welcome too:good!:

Please explain to me how the Knoxville police can be crooked if they arrested them in the first place....If they were crooked, wouldn't they have let all four of them go int the first place?....Just wondering.....

The Gun Control Act of 1968, Pub. L. No. 90-618, 82 Stat. 1213 - The law also required that all newly-manufactured firearms produced by licensed manufacturers in the United States and imported into the United States bear a serial number. Firearms manufactured prior to the Gun Control Act remain exempt from the serial number requirement. Defacement or removal of the serial number (if present) is a felony offense.

I hope for their sakes the feds don't take an interest in the case. Mandatory Federal sentencing guidelines are nasty. Fortunately, the Meth business in east TN is keeping the Federal courts busy these days.

So you advocate changing the laws and rules to accomodate the 17-18 year olds? Absurdity at the highest level. Count me in on the last point--if this is the best representation we can offer for the University Of Tennessee.

The Feds will find time. This may not get swept under the rug.

the rationalizing that the guns were left by the previous renters is pretty comical....

They should all be gone imo. This is ridiculous. No tolerance for crap like this. This is blatant disrespect to the team, Pearl, and the University. Bye bye.

I really beleive we should wait and see what comes of the charges before we kick anyone out of the program, certainly would be nice to allow the four players due process and an oppertunity to provide their defense through legal counsel. If found guilty, then and only then, kick all four out of the University, but only if found guilty.

They all will definitely not be kicked off the team for this alone. Players don't get dismissed for misdemeanors as the OP said; however, if this is the second or third disciplinary problem for any of the players, then they might be dismissed.
