I believe Pruitt recruited Hyatt and Tillman. Tennessee WRs have went down since then.He came here from Gardner Webb and TNTech before that. He does not have much of a track record other than Hyatt and Tillman. Maybe he is not very good. Maybe he is. These athletes get a lot of coaching nowadays before college from highly qualified and skilled people, and sometimes it is really discouraging when your club or even HS coach is better than your college position coach. It happens often. Might not be the case here. Maybe it’s sour grapes. Maybe the guy has no personality.
I don't comment much on this sort of stuff, because the vast majority of posts on position coaches are message board overreactions, but seeing 2 out of 3 of our top WRs leave (both could be starters next season), suggests something is wrong in the WR room. This is the only position group this is happening; we've had a few other defections, but they've all underperformed in some way or another. When folks are leaving it starts to smell like smoke.
This is deceptive because in our system the quarterbacks only read one side of the field. So the guys you see open are running dummy routes. Defenses have started correctly guessing or reading which side the play is at and are rotating safeties over to get numbers on our receivers. That's how Georgia and Ohio State wrecked us.I saw guys running wide open while Joe Milton jr thought he was at pass, kick, punt competition.
Is Pope on the ropes?
Both were struggling under Pruitt. Hyatt struggled his first yr under Heupel & ended up being replaced in the lineup mid season.Heupel and Pope inherited Hyatt and Tillman.
None of Pope's wide receiver recruits have seen a lot of snaps.
I think that Pope gets the 2025 season to prove himself as an elite position coach.
Not sure I agree here. If the rumors that Squirrel wanted more money are true, I don’t think you throw more money at him this late in his career. I hate to see him go, but if the money is better elsewhere that’s fine. Opens the door for Staley. He’s gonna be good.Squirrel and Matthews leaving definitely raise flags.
White just never impressed me with his play. Wish him well, but even tho I don't know what he was making, he was overpaid IMO.Not sure I agree here. MM, according to what appear to be reliable sources, is in the midst of an NIL contract restructure change and just had to get in the portal in case things didn’t work out. Seems to be positive news.
Pope expects extraordinary work ethic from players to get to the next level and play winning football. Players in previous years who understood that and achieved did not gripe. Some of the players leaving were good but not good enough to win. Matthews we know is good enough. Maybe he is positioned to make more money and is just negotiating. Do I know what is going on? No, just guessing, here.Someone asked Nate:
OP: What happened? Why is everyone leaving? Was it playing time? Heupel?
Nate: Everyone hated their position coach, nothing to do with Heupel, they love him.
OP: Was it that bad?
Nate: Yeah, it's that bad.
