Playoff game in Neyland questions/thoughts

I’ve been back and forth on this. Manuel can still keep OSU in but drop them the max amount possible as a final shiv in the back.

To avoid the appearance of bias however,, I expect them to move them the average of how far down they have moved other top 10 teams that lost to unranked opponents. I have that average at six spots.

Dropping them to #8 would ostensibly be two spots below us with SMU being #7. I don’t see much justification in the committee only dropping them four spots to #6 and putting us at #7.

My best guess is we go to (ranking/seed) 6/8, OSU drops to 7/9.
I think BVS is getting to some of us. Really we should all sit back relax and let the rest play out. Our work is already done. OSU is for sure getting in but they will drop just like we did after losing to UGA. An argument can be made that they drop a spot or 2 further because they lost at home to an unranked below .500 team. I just don't see Oregon, Penn St, UGA, & Texas finishing in the top 7. Teams have dropped in the rankings after CCG since the beginning of time. While they won't drop out of the Playoffs they will drop significantly in the rankings after a loss. I got us as the 7 seed when the dust settles.

Good info.
Has any season ticket holder received an email from the ticket office? I contacted the ticket office in mid November asking them how it would be handled. The accounting manager told me no decision had been made but to watch your email over the next month or so.

That’s where I have us too after next weekend.

FWIW when you add the Big Ten Bias to the MI vs OSU game, I believe you’re gonna find that they will barely view MI as a “bad loss.” Regardless of the spread, that they were at home, etc, they have an easy excuse to NOT drop OSU a ton.

It’s an “all time great rivalry game. Anything can happen so that’s not a bad loss REALLY for OSU. Just tradition of CFB.”

🙄

I can feel them thinking that and justifying OSU staying high up.

Several publications, (CBS, Bleacher Report, etc) have TN and OSU 8th or 9th. I've seen it both ways. Vol fans would argue that a home loss to Mich should be worst than a road loss to Ark. Our win over Bama is probably not looked at any better than OSU's win over Indiana given Bama's recent debacle at OU and 3 losses. It will be interesting if a 3 loss UGA would drop below us given it was an extra game and they beat us head to head. I doubt it. I'm struggling to see a path higher than 8th given the teams locked in above us and wouldn't be surprised at 9th. A game in Neyland would be awesome.

Every team that has lost to a unranked team has dropped at least 5-6 spots in the CFP poll. They're not going to spare Ohio state just because you think there is some bias for them. Bama dropped 6 spots, Indiana dropped 5 spots even while losing at Ohio State. BYU and A&M both dropped 5 spots. That's a guarantee.

Most likely is we'll be ranked 6th, they'll be ranked 7th (which is seeded 8th and 9th).

ESPN has TN at 6th in Strength of Record, which has been the primary metric used by the CFP committee so far.

With SEC and Big 10 championships, two of the teams ahead of us still must lose another game. Even if that does not count against the two losers, there are only two auto bids who can push us back. That would put us at the number 8 seed, hosting Ohio State in the first round.

Oddly enough, Ohio State was 1 rank behind us in SOS prior to Michigan/ Vanderbilt games. Playing Michigan in Columbus, Ohio moved them ahead of us at Nashville. I don’t agree with that at all, but I doubt I’ll find many people to get into the weeds with me on one or two SOS spots.

I don’t know why we allow Notre Dame to get in and not count as a Non Power Conference bid. Boise State should not be allowed as an auto bid with Notre Dame already in. The Notre Dame exception is the dumbest aspect of the 12 team playoffs.

It will be interesting to see what AP and Coaches poll says today. If UT is ahead or behind Osu will the committee go the opposite or follow the polls?

CFP and AP polls have been almost identical each week so far this season fwiw

Given today’s outcomes, I think it’s definitely more likely than not that we will host a playoff game.

Im just curious on how the ticketing will work. Will they send an email out to season ticket holders offering them the option of buying their season ticket seats for the game? If so, when will they send the email out?

Im curious as to if it will be handled like a usual home game, or if they will give the away team more tickets than usual.

Who all would yall like to see us host? Me personally id prefer a non sec team, since we host them yearly. I want a matchup we rarely see, like osu @ ut or tex @ ut or something like that
Texas is SEC now. We will host OSU or Indiana but we want know until after next week.

Got mine this morning. They are taking preorders from season ticket holders for all CFP bowl games through Dec 11, and will send invoices for your seats for a first round home game on the 8th. You will have until the 11th to pay or decline those (by doing nothing).

I received an email stating season ticket holders would receive an invoice for their current seats. Remaining tickets would be offered via donor rank.

Thanks, I received after I posted.

Pulled this below from a NYTimes article on Penn State playoff ticket communication to season ticket holders. Read in a few articles the face value from $100 - $250 set by CFP but I don't know if host schools can flex on pricing. I would doubt it but don't know. If we host, secondary market should be very expensive.

"The rollout of ticketing procedures is one of many steps for all potential host sites in the first year of the 12-team Playoff. The CFP released an 87-page manual to schools in August to prepare for hosting a game that will either fall on Friday, Dec. 20, or Saturday, Dec. 21. The determination of which game is played Friday night versus who plays in the first-round triple-header on Saturday will be made by television.

Ticket prices for the first-round games held on college campuses were set by the CFP. Pricing is unified across the country, with different price points for seats along the lower bowl sideline, lower bowl end zones, upper bowl, suites and student section, among others. General seating prices — not including clubs and suites — will range from $100 to $250. The deadline for season ticket holders to reserve seats for a potential Playoff game is 11:59 p.m. ET Friday, Nov. 22.

The four first-round byes in the Playoff are reserved for the highest-ranked conference champions. First-round home games go to the next four highest-ranked teams. In the latest CFP rankings revealed Tuesday, sixth-seeded Penn State would be hosting No. 11 Ole Miss. Though Penn State won’t know for sure whether it’s hosting until Dec. 8 when the bracket is released, the university has long prepared for the possibility. Last spring, Penn State moved winter graduation from Dec. 21 to the following Sunday. Attempting to host a Playoff game in Beaver Stadium while holding graduation across the parking lot in the Bryce Jordan Center was not possible.

How exactly will College Football Playoff home games work?

Student tickets are not available yet, but Penn State does plan to have the same number of student tickets available (21,000) as offered during the regular season, deputy athletic director Vinnie James said in an interview with The Athletic.

Penn State athletics has worked with the student government to determine how to best handle the ticket process for students. This procedure will be communicated to students in the coming weeks. Student tickets cost $25.
Most of the CFP tickets for the quarterfinals and semis have a face value of $330 (club) and $200 (lower/upper). For the CFP Championship game, face value prices are between $463 (upper end zone) to $1,540 (lower sideline all-inclusive).

Knowing this, I’d expect tickets for a game in Neyland to have a face value of $100-$250, depending on location.
