Please DON'T start Nico [Nico merged]

Sorry, I just made a mistake and merged like three threads by accident. I've got this one back and now I need to filter out the "who's attending the utsa game" thread.

Maybe take a deep breath and step back?

You're a VFL. I get it. Back before we had VFL's, the term was "Rabid Vol Fan". Used to be my byline on VN. I have driven all over Knox County on Saturday afternoons back in '78 and '79 looking for the best AM signal so I could listen to John Ward. Was it WNOX? Too many years ago.

Passion is a good thing. Whether it's love, your faith, your profession, or your favorite team, passion is what separates the good from the great. You clearly have passion for UT, and UT Football.

As do many here, including me. But there comes a point, as it did with Battle, Majors, Fulmer, and Jones (I'm ignoring those not mentioned...they never earned the title IMO) where you question whether they still have the same passion for UT Football as you do.

We're not there yet with Coach Heupel. He has, IMO, at least another year before we can ask that question. But we are at the point where we can honestly ask ourselves if he gets what UT Football is all about.

If so, he has some tough decisions to make. If not, it will be evident in the W-L record at the end of the season.

Ask yourself this: If CJH, or the players, don't love UT as much as you do, then why are you taking it out on other Vol fans who do?

I hope they win out. Deep down, I know they won't. Unless they fix what ails them, this is a 7-5 team. Talent has nothing to do with it.

Coaching and heart does.

Go Vols.
Just stfu and stay home if you’re done. You don’t have to brag about how disappointed you are. We get it. They didn’t win so they don’t deserve your attention.

I’ve Seen some really heartbreaking things in Neyland. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in 1990 vs Notre Dame for example. I’ve seen some wonderful things too. The fumble caused by G-d vs Arkansas is another. Bowl games have been a mixed bag as well. I wouldn’t trade any of those experiences for anything.

And the kids have not played well so far. Will that continue? Maybe and maybe not. But at least you admit that “deep down” your only a fan if you expect them to win.

Enjoy your vacation. Leave the TV off

Is Milton capable of running this hurry up offense? I have noticed that in the three games that the offense is set, but he stops and stares at the sideline. Sometimes to the point where the clock runs out or have to burn a timeout. He has all the talent in the world for QB, but is he having trouble reading the defense and calling an audible without needing it called in?

Sure he can run it......but not very well.

If you go back and look at last year's Vandy game, he actually didn't have a good game throwing the ball. It just so happened the running game was insanely great.

In the Clemson game he did play well. It gave me some false hope for this year.

He is a great team guy and i think a VERY good person. However, this doesn't make him a great QB on the field.

Unfortunately, there's no genius to what Florida did. They figured out that they could stuff the run with a 5 man box which kills any hope of throwing it down the field.
Joe Milton along with the Oline kills any hope of throwing it down field.

Have any of you guys went back and watched the spring game. Milton looked exactly like he always has. The offense with Moore looked like what were use to but he will probably never get a chance. I don't get it.

Milton IS the biggest issue. It all begins and ends with him. With Hooker we’re 3-0 easy.

Milton is a serviceable QB. His numbers aren’t terrible. So those who support him are right in a sense. The problem is he MISSES OBVIOUS and developing opportunities bc he can’t process situations fast enough in live game action. Creating those mismatches and split second opportunities is what Heupel’s O is all about. Take that away and we’re DOA.

Milton has to be benched. Nico has to start. NEXT GAME. Or we give up 60% of our O going into the heart of our SEC schedule including our fast tempo advantage before the opening KO.

If Saban can start skinny mini Bryce Young in prime time as a Frosh and DOMINATE what’s our excuse?

Make no mistake Volfans it’s NOT hysteria or Sunday morning quarterbacking IMO to recognize reality that our entire season is on the line with Heup’s choice of STARTING QB. Now that we ALL KNOW Joe isn’t the answer.

Players coaches don’t win championships. You can’t protect your players and excuse away their game day flaws. At the expense of the W/L record. That’s the road to ruin and the unemployment line.

Time to face the music
If only you were the coach...

During the spring game if you go rewatch it, Milton looks exactly like he has since day one. Nico looked green but Moore looked the most in control. Vol fans have seen the story too many times. I don't understand why they are so set on Milton. Remember he was starting over Hooker until he got hurt.

I’ve heard and read many criticizing Joes decision making ability (e.g. The running out of bounds).
Having a strong football I.Q. Is not the same as regular I.Q. obviously.
some have one but not the other.
Whereas Josh Dobbs (an actual rocket scientist) had both.
I think that the biggest concern is that Joe, despite his size, doesn’t like to run.
Whether that’s not liking to be hit, or fearing injury, or whatever the reason.
I think that translates to some as poor decision making.
It could be coaches telling him not to or him just not Wanting to. The result is the same.
What Joe REALLY needs is having our best and most important lineman, Hays, back. The sooner the better.
Joe is such a great guy and has been so loyal to our program. I so much want some success for him.

I’d have to go back and watch that one again, but honestly I just remember a bunch of short throws and getting the ball out quick. He’s just not going to scan the field, look off coverage or improvise a lot. When he finishes his drop, the ball has to either come out or look for the check down. The second he stands there looking for the 2nd route, everything seems to fall apart.

Sadly the answer is no. He just has a cannon arm and not much else. Gaston Moore would be better in this offense.

The truth about Joe:
1) Joe does not like getting hit even though he is bigger than a lot of linebackers that’s why he just chucked the ball up in the air that was intercepted by Florida. Further proof that’s why he ran the ball out of bounds on the last play of the game on the last play of the game year before last. That’s why he ran out of bounds on the 2 point conversion last week. He refuses to lower his head and run over much smaller defense backs.
He refuses to hold the ball long enough to get his second and third reads, he either throws it long and way over the head of the receivers or throws wide receiver screens and Florida knew that. This is an offense that is very dependent on hitting the long ball down the edge or spreading the defense and the QB running the ball up the middle, Joe can’t make the long pass on the outside because he won’t hold the ball long enough and doesn’t run the ball up the middle as we saw last year. In short we can’t compete with a QB that is afraid of contact, Bottom line : Joe has got to go !!

Just my opinion, but here's my take. Last year A'M let Weigman play and learn on the job as a blue chip QB. He had an average, but typical 1st year starting a few games. But he learned the playback, took his lumps and got acclimated to the game. Now this year he's one of the best young QB's in the country. If we lose a few more games I say turn it over to Nico and play for the future. If we win out or only lose a game or so then yea keep Joe in. But if it gets to where we can't win the East or a good bowl, then I say let Nico get ready take his lumps and play for the future..You see it every year in college football, a young QB takes his lumps the first year and plays for the future. I'd hate for next year to be his learning curve when he could do it this year. JMO, I'm sure everyone has their own on this subject.

I get that he needs experience but this is NOT the kind of experience he needs. The OL has major issues and is flat out dangerous. The last thing we need is an inexperienced and talented QB to get a major injury for nothing.

Milton is not our future and he probably has no future in the NFL based on his accuracy and decision making but he is HUGE and can take punishment.

Until the OL is fixes we need to start Milton. If he gets hurt and we have to go to plan b so be it but dont risk hurting Nico or giving him a bad experience as a starting QB. This year isnt worth it.

True freshman starting at UCLA. Just do a google search about NCAA freshmen QBs - there is a long list of good ones.

Milton isn’t an SEC or Big 10 quality QB - and he is a 6th year senior.

The DC does not teach fundamentals. That is what the position coaches are for.

The DC is responsible for the scheme and play calls. Banks is doing a poor job on those.
We won’t have to worry in a couple of weeks when Texas A&M comes to town. Looks like Auburn is putting one of them on the stretcher about every play.

Yeah plenty of 5 star QBs play as freshman. Nico needs to play. He also is our best chance to win this year. Joe is a good guy and a great back up
