I thought in the spring that in the '15 season we would be back to competing for the SEC, but that was with the thought that Riley would eventually take the starting job and come in to the '15 season with some game experience. Now I'm thinking it will be the '16 season before we will be really competive with Dormady taking over midway thru the '15 season. I just have no faith in Dobbs.

you have changed your mind because a kid left the team who never played a snap or was ever really seen in real live action outside of the spring game? makes no sense at all.

Then you need to take notes from the masses on here and declare that Herbstreit is an idiot that doesn't know a damn thing! It's the VN way.

Herbie knows his stuff, but that doesn't mean he's focking Nostradamus. If he could accurately predict win totals for 120+ CFB teams, he wouldn't be working as an announcer.

The sec east is down this year, we have a legit shot at winning some games against ok teams from our side.

We have a legit shot at winning the SEC-E.

Tell me which team is appreciably better than us. Take as much time as you need.

You're delusional. South Carolina, UGA are more than appreciably better than us and even UF has a better roster than we have, they just don't have an offensive identity right now and have a questionable coach. We're about even with Mizzou. Hope that answers your question.

The talent's there, holmes.

And most of it is 18 years old and never played a down of college football.

it doesn't have to be a national guy.

Anyone that offers an opinion of the team that isn't flattering is an idiot.

There are gator fans upset at the early lines that have been posted in las vegas. They are upset Florida is a 17 point underdog to Alabama (in Alabama) and forget we lost our last seven games including georgia southern.

I can't think of one writer in the last several years who wrote that tennessee would struggle who wasn't called an idiot.

Espn, the people who vote at sec media days, people that write pre season magazines, etc, etc, etc. all idiots.

He actually is a good bit more optimistic than some of the guys in Vegas. Todd Furhman has us going under 4.5 wins and the early odds I saw from the Golden Nugget has us significant underdogs vs Okla, USCe, Georgia, Bama, Ole Miss, Mizzou and Florida.

Nobody knows what in the world UT's gonna wind up doing this year, it's all speculation at this point. Anybody paying attention to our roster, how young our talent is and how awful our performances were last year vs the best teams we played is right in being cautious while predicting 6-7 wins

He was on chattanooga espn radio a few moments ago. Says Tennessee is two years away from being a real contender in the east. Says the over/under is about six but could get to seven wins with bowl win. Says butch needs to find a qb and a tb.
Now, with that said, it doesn't say much for marlin lane, who has somehow become a darling of the masses. Lane has never been healthy and at best is an average tb in this league.....maybe a cut below average. He is a solid substitute and special teams player. Hopefully, Hurd will not struggle and answer the bell, fulfilling the promise predicted by some analysts.
It also doesn't say much for Worley or Dobbs. Personally, I like them both, but I always become concerned when :hi:experts that know more than me, express a different opinion.

There is no one capable of predicting the upcoming season.

There is no one capable of evaluating the improvement a player makes from one year to the next before the season starts.

What does he have to make this point? Worley was beginning to play well last year before he got hurt.

Anyway Blah, Blah, Blah!!! Let the season determine what is needed.

2015 is the jumping off point for UT contending for winning the East.

Such an odd series of words ultimately meaning nothing.

2015 is a "jumping off point"? Essentially anything be considered a "jumping off point." We could go 5-7 (again) and it could be considered a "jumping off point."

And "contending for winning the East"...so, in contention for nothing more than a chance to play for a championship. Essentially, in contention for the possibility of being in contention.

Wow. Quintessential volnation here. With expectations like these (by year three, we hope that we will begin a process by which we will eventually compete for a chance to compete for something), Butch really has to work hard for all those millions.

I can see how what I said can come across as me saying Herbie is wrong. That's not what I'm saying. The point I'm making is that he's just repeating what he's read from another article basically. What he said isn't incorrect by any means, it's pretty accurate. The only point I'm making is that it's not truly his opinion. These guys don't have enough time to look at who's leaving, who's coming, what's changed on a daily basis, etc. So they play it safe and go with a safe answer.

That's because tn fans think every coach should get 5 or 6 yes just to have a winning season because tn situation is different than any other school ever... Lol

I agree completely. Butch should be able to simply wiggle his nose and stock the roster with experienced All-Americans at every position and we win the SEC this season. Anything else is simply making excuses.

I don't pay much attention to these preseason rankings. Nobody expected much out of Auburn when they won the NC in 2010, and when they reached the NC last year. It was all.....:worship:
Alabubba...Alabubba...Alabubba...Alabubba...Alabubba...Alabubba...Alabubba...Alabubba...Alabubba...Alabubba...Alabubba...Alabubba...Alabubba...Alabubba...Alabubba... :worship:

Wasn't it just two years ago that USC started out ranked as No.1 in the country....laden with talent...then about midway through the season, the wheels came off?

They would have laughed if you had said Mizzou and Auburn would play in the SECCG. So, their predictions are usually based on what happened the previous year. But the truth of the matter is, when teams "break out" of the doldrums, it's usually in a dramatic fashion....not this slow, but steady improvement.

Butch Jones Cincinnati team broke out after his first year...so, I'm not worried. Not with the talent coming in.
Butch didn't play a sec schedule yearly at Cincinatti. :eek:lol:

the broke out of neyland stadium with there life....derek dooley kicked ole butch's a$$ whether u wanna believe it or not...dooleys ut team would have would big east that year ..

I guess you have selective memory...we had a good team that year until Bray and Hunter got hurt. After that it was in the crapper. People always want to say Dooley beat Butch, but when they played, we had a shot at making noise in the east. Unfortunately we went down with a whimper.
