Butch didn't play a sec schedule yearly at Cincinatti. :eek:lol:

That has to be one of the dumbest statements that I have read on here....and that is saying a lot. He won the Big East with Big East level talent. His teams achieved more than UT did during the same period. You are not going to win the SEC with C-USA talent. Don't believe me, ask Dooley.

Sorry....Dooley played with Conference USA talent

He didn't have an SEC caliber program at Cincinnati either. Nevertheless, Jones's brief history at both Cincinnati and Central Michigan demonstrates teams that improved significantly relative to their competition from his first season to his third and there is some relevance to that.

He follows Ohio State, not UT. Lane is and has been better than Neal the last 2 yrs. They may have played the game but they act like they know more than they actually do. If he actually followed UT I might believe him. But he doesnt.

Denial

You act as if that TN team was not talented that year. Hell Cincinnati was running the damn ball down our throat that game. Dooley had to do an onside kick in the second quarter to keep the ball out of Cincinnati's hand. Yeah we won, but it was not because Butch Jones was out coached.

You seem to forget that both Hunter and Bray got injured later in the year. If not for the injuries, we could've gone bowling. Butch Jones went bowling, AND beat Vandy without going into OT.

Such an odd series of words ultimately meaning nothing.

2015 is a "jumping off point"? Essentially anything be considered a "jumping off point." We could go 5-7 (again) and it could be considered a "jumping off point."

And "contending for winning the East"...so, in contention for nothing more than a chance to play for a championship. Essentially, in contention for the possibility of being in contention.

Wow. Quintessential volnation here. With expectations like these (by year three, we hope that we will begin a process by which we will eventually compete for a chance to compete for something), Butch really has to work hard for all those millions.

Well Oregon, you're in midseason form this morning.

Since I've offended your sensibilities with how I worded my earlier post, as I seem to oftentimes do, allow me to restate. I, KBVol, do not anticipate or expect UT to represent the SEC East in the SEC Championship game based on our results/record in 2014.

Completely new offensive and defensive line starters and reliance on too many freshmen in the 2 deep have me believing that we will not be experienced enough, strong enough and indeed ready to challenge for a spot in the SECCG until 2015.

I expect the team to make a bowl game, be competitive in every game we play, win 1 or 2 vs teams where we are big underdogs and beat the hell out of Vandy. Those are my expectations. What are yours?

Kirk is pretty dang good with his reporting and thoughts on football teams. I think he's one of the best out there. He respects UT and wants them back in the big picture.

Against by far the easiest schedule of any team in the SEC....?

They got an easier UF team than UT did. Other than that, it was pretty comparable to UT's schedule. UT lost to its 2 West opponents as did Vandy so while Auburn was better than Ole Miss it was a wash.

Honestly, I have no expectations for this year. Given how poorly we finished last year (and how poorly we played for most of it) and given all the youth we look to be counting on, I wouldn't be totally shocked by 4-8. But please note, that doesn't mean I believe that the coaching staff will have done an amazing job if they get to 6-6. A good deal of the reason I won't be surprised if we're awful is because, after seeing what this staff brought to the table last year, I'm far from certain that they can develop players at this level or that they can consistently game plan successfully against quality coaches at this level.

A good coaching staff should be able to post a winning season here by year 2. I don't know if this staff can achieve that, but, the preceding statement still stands.

But Vandy at Neyland, with all theit starting DBs hurt, was too hard to overcome

That winning drive by Vandy was a thing of beauty. How could we expect our DC to come up with a call to stop 2nd and goal with 16 seconds to preserve the 10-6 victory against such a powerhouse?

Right! Sometimes a win can be attributed to talent and talent alone. If you refuse to acknowledge that there was a wide talent disparity between UT and Cincinnati, then I don't know what to tell you. When the talent was gone, the wins stopped.

What defense would you have called oh wise one? I mean AJ was right there, but bit on the fake. I don't know what else to tell you.

He still got beat by a 5-7 team

By what history will say as one of the worst, if not the, worst coach in UT history.

The bottom line is the talent excuse couldn't be used by Dooley and it can't be used by Jones. We had more than enough talent to take Georgia to the wire and beat SC, but not enough to beat Vandy?

That tells me that there is some issues with coaching when you can beat a top 10 team but not a 7-4 Vandy at home to secure a possible bowl game

Vols will run and play action pass better next year than last. Third and long ain't where they wanna be.

Defense will be faster and improved everywhere except defending runs between the tackles.

Special teams will be improved everywhere except field goals, probably.

They will be a better football team and you will be able to notice it.

They got more talent than in a decade. Yea, they're young, so enjoy the process.

Well, we did put in a true freshman at quarterback between there. I'd say that affected the performance of the team a little bit.
