Yep, he could easily have stayed home.
This act alone is the starting point of "could have been avoided".
He didn't, regardless of any proof that shows he was justified or not, or that his opinions concerning what was going on and happening as correct? (don't know if right term) the act of putting yourself into the mayhem creates a good probability that he "went looking", or, went in with a reason to be in the mayhem which means injecting yourself in a contrary position to the people doing whatever they are doing there. Even if it was to clean graffiti, this act in and of itself in that situation is something that can and will lead to escalation.
Should have stayed away.
Even though I agree he should have stayed home and have questioned why his parents didn’t stop him , I believe the facts that he was helping clean up ( graffiti) could be looked at as he didn’t go looking for trouble , he stayed until trouble came to him . Lots of moving parts .
